About Joshua

If you are looking for a private math or physics instructor who is patient, knowledgable, creative, compassionate, and insightful, your search is over. I am both an instructor with the deep knowledge of math and physics that comes from having a physics Ph.D. and a man with a broad range of life experience who understands what it feels like to struggle. My overriding goal is provide you or your child with the best personalized, ego-free instruction you can find.

First and foremost, I listen and observe: only by paying close attention to a student can an instructor discover the best way to teach that student. An instructor who lacks the ability to perceive a student's unique nature and adapt to it is limited in what he will be able to help that student achieve. My receptive style encourages openness, allowing me to quickly identify those places where a student struggles or lacks confidence. I treat all my students with respect and kindness and am passionate about never making my students feel stupid or foolish — there is nothing worse for a struggling student than an instructor who belittles or judges him/her for a lack of understanding. Finally, I am patient: students are often too hard on themselves for their inability to understand a concept quickly. Some students simply need more time and guidance, but it is my firm conviction that all my students can learn the math and physics I have to teach.

I can satisfy any of your private instructional needs in math and physics, from supportive tutoring for classwork up to creative home physics experiments and instruction for homeschoolers. I take pride in my ability to break down complex concepts and explain them in ways that are accessible. If I fail to get a concept across, I consider it a personal challenge to find a different approach that works. There is no level of math and physics anxiety I can't handle. I can confidently guarantee that my instruction will produce increased confidence and success in math and physics.

A little about me: I graduated with a Ph.D. from physics from UT Austin in 2015 and have worked for the past year on a physics education postdoc. Teaching, I have discovered, is what I do best. I am in the process of obtaining my teaching certificate online and am seeking employment at the university level in a teaching-oriented position. In the meantime, I need to stay in Austin at least another year for my oldest daughter (I have two, 13 and 9) to finish middle school, and I need to make a living while she does that!

Lots of students struggle with math — there's no shame in it! I excel at helping students overcome their math anxiety and gain confidence. Whether you need help with fundamental concepts or problem solving strategies, I will find a way of teaching that works for you.

Physics scares people, but it shouldn't! I love trying to find comprehensible ways to explain the mysteries of the universe to new people. Let my geeky, enthusiastic teaching help you learn to love physics too.

Please contact me if you have further questions. If you like what you see, don't hesitate to set up lessons — the earlier you act, the more open my schedule will be.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Great tutor with different approaches.

Helped with Calc AB and Physics. Daughter said Josh is easy to relate to and can explain the subjects in different ways. Makes learning easy with excellent explanations.
