About Darcy

Hi folks!

My name is Darcy and I have been a lifelong lover of reading, writing, speaking, and words. When it comes to tutoring, I take a bit of an unconventional approach. I believe that there is a distinction between the teacher and the tutor: the teacher's job is to teach students the information that they're supposed to know; they lay it all out for them and provides them the puzzle pieces and a pretty good idea for how to put them together, but it's their own method.

The tutor's job is to help the student organize the pieces, look at the picture from a different angle, and assist them in putting it together. It might happen in a way that is different from what the teacher taught, but in a way that makes more sense for the student.

All my life I've been the kind of learner who either understood the material right off the bat or had to find their own method. My writing was always described as authentic and genuine by teachers and professors. Because of that, I've always had a knack at seeing different approaches at tackling a problem or a topic; it's just something that comes natural to me. Helping students find their own way to solve a problem that makes sense, if only to them, is one of my strengths, and I'm excited to be able to share it.

My test scores are SAT reading: 710, SAT Writing: 760; AP Lang & Lit: 5s on both.

Like I said above, writing and creative writing has always come very natural to me, and a part of that has to do with the fact that I competed in Speech & Debate all throughout high school. I did Original Oratory where I wrote and memorized a 10 minute original speech and performed it in front of judges. I went to State in it, both Junior and Senior year, and was in Top 24 Speakers in Texas in 2013.

I've also helped coach students in public speaking and have useful strategies to help with their speaking.

As for my qualifications in Government, right now I am a senior Government major at the University of Texas and work on local Democratic campaigns. I've also been in love with politics and government since I was literally a child, so I've had an avid passion for it for a while.

If anything in this profile has piqued your interest, please feel free to contact me! I'm very approachable and always try to establish a personal relationship with each student. I'm not here to lecture, reprimand, or bore you; I'm here to help you find a solution in a place you may not have looked in.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I competed in Speech & Debate in all 4 years of high school, specifically in an event called Original Oratory, where I wrote, memorized, and performed my own speech on whatever topic I chose. I competed in Houston and across Texas, qualifying to the Texas Forensic Association's State Tournament where, my senior year, I ranked in the Top 24.

I also coached for two years after graduating at high school and coached students in public speaking, including Extemporaneous Speaking.
