About Kelly

I am so excited to find an opportunity to continue teaching while I am in graduate school, and I especially love working one-on-one or in small groups. I have taught high school English for over ten years in Austin, grades 9-12, but I have also tutored many of my friends' children when they were in fifth grade through middle school. My best subjects are expository and creative writing, grammar, and literature, but I have also taught math, science, and social studies through a local GED program and as a special education teacher in a pull-out program for a local high school. I even taught accelerated 12th-grade English one summer at St. Edwards in their Graduate Enhancement Program. I speak some Spanish, which I learned when I was in the Army at the Defense Language Institute, and my mother was French, which means I heard French (and studied it in college) all my life! I once taught both languages at the beginning level at a middle-school in a small town in Maine, where I grew up.

I think good teachers can take complex ideas and simplify them, and they know how to build in skills by revisiting and reviewing important concepts without being boring. My teaching style is very much about engaging the student and using his or her interests and prior knowledge as a starting point. I had a 95% passing rate on the Texas state exams during each year that I taught in the public schools here, and I was hand-picked to participate in a grant-funded pull-out program for freshmen where our team had great success. I am a great listener, compassionate, warm, and friendly, but I also have lots of fun stories from my days as a military intelligence specialist in the Army! My students, my daughter, and her friends have been my greatest teacher throughout the years, and I love being around young people and helping to nurture their innate abilities. My goal is to make good use of your time and to target the areas you are struggling with, to give you skills that will transfer into other learning opportunities, to help you feel confident, and to use all the knowledge about learning I have acquired over the years to help you have a great experience. Thank you so much for your consideration and trust!

I am a good English teacher because I take the time to teach structure (in writing) and patterns (in reading), and I am familiar with reading material that challenges and interests young people.

I have a very flexible schedule as a full-time graduate student, and I am eager to hear from you. Please don't ever think that a phone call in the evening or early morning will inconvenience me. You are also always free to call with a question if you are at a stopping point in a reading assignment or struggling and need a boost. I look forward to a great working relationship and to hearing from you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
