About Mason

I began my formal studies in Arabic back in 2009 at the University of Texas at Austin, the academic home of Mahmoud al-Batal and Kristen Brustad, two of the co-authors of the book al-Kitaab used around the nation as the primary textbook in Arabic studies. UT Austin was also a large recipient of government scholarship money through the Flagship program. I received that scholarship, completed my domestic undergraduate studies in Austin and then spent 9 months in Alexandria, Egypt for my study abroad.

My Arabic education has been a balanced mix of formal and self paced studies. The former includes a bachelor's degree in Arabic Language and Literature with a balanced yet detailed focus on colloquial and modern standard Arabic. Beyond that I have been personally interested in more classical Arabic. To that end I have studied a number of traditional Arabic grammar and morphology texts which have given me an even more well-rounded understanding of the language that nicely complements my collegiate studies.

After graduating from UT I worked for it under varying capacities, administrative or otherwise. I have been at various times throughout 2012-2014 a student mentor, a language partner, a study group leader, an assistant teacher, and an administrative assistant to the summer intensive language program. It was a pleasure to work and give back to the program that gave me so much. These positions also gave me valuable experience in working closely with students and guiding them through the intricacies of language learning.

-Bachelor's degree 2009-2012 from UT Austin
-Study Abroad in Alexandria, Egypt 2011-2012
-Extensive understanding of Arabic grammar and morphology
-Understanding of Qur'anic Arabic
-Various positions held in teaching/academic capacities

Perhaps one of the more enjoyable things about teaching, is that I'm always learning as well. It is as much an education for me as it is for the student. I'm looking forward to working together to improve both our understandings of this amazing language. Till then, ma3-salaama!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I'm happy to say that I've had the privilege of studying at one of the top colleges for Arabic studies in the states: UT Austin. The education there was comprehensive and made us well-rounded practitioners of both colloquial Arabic and MSA. After graduating, I tutored for two years as an employee with UT Austin and was a language partner for the scholarship students. I'm looking forward to walking new students through the intricacies of this language as well!

Knowledgeable and compassionate instruction

I've only had a few lessons but I've really enjoyed the amount of context and the depth applied to the subject. That being said, I think Mason's strength as an instructor really comes from the fact that he puts people at ease during the learning process. It's not often that you find a teacher that strikes such a great balance between passion for subject matter and compassion for nervous new stude
