About Robert

I have a BA in History and a BA in Political Science from the University of Kentucky. I took a variety of History courses throughout college, but my area of focus was centered around US History and Russian History. My Political Science courses were primarily centered around international diplomacy and US foreign relations, however being from the Washington DC area, I'm also well versed in American politics and the political process. Starting in the fall I am attending Texas State University for my Masters in History, and minor in Secondary Education.

My approach to teaching/tutoring is to ensure that there is a baseline understanding established. After this, then the information is reviewed, but questions are posed to the group that makes them develop their own argument/opinion towards a topic, and have them back up their argument. This serves two purposes, the first, it makes the student do their own research, instead of rely on a teacher to provide the information or listen to then drone on. The second purpose is that it gives the student the creative flexibility to approach their argument from an angle that they are most comfortable with. I have unofficial experience tutoring while in college (just by helping friends in class understand the subjects that we went over), and I have small group teaching experience that was gained through military service. It was there that I gained the experience of taking very technical information and making it understandable to individuals that had a baseline understanding, building them up slowly to a point of confidence where by the end, they not only had a functional understanding of what they were to do, but could articulate the steps as well. What I enjoy most about teaching/tutoring is being able to help someone walk away understanding a topic or subject that they came in confused about.

In addition to the academic tutoring side of things, I am also an avid Chess player, and I can also provide lessons to those who are wanting to learn the game. I'd be more than happy to discuss any questions that you may have, and I have a very flexible tutoring schedule.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a Bachelors of Arts in History from the University of Kentucky. I took a wide variety of courses within the History subject field, however my focus was primarily in U.S. History. I prefer a teaching method where I present information, however I ask questions that get individuals thinking and developing their own ideas/arguments towards a particular topic, and have the ability to back up their argument with solid facts.

Chess

Chess has always been a casual hobby of mine ever since my dad taught me the game when I was really young. Depending on the players skill level, the best way to teach the game is to use a set that has the movement of the pieces on each piece, and play the game with the student, explaining every move to them. At the conclusion of each game, go over the strategy that they employed, and what they could have done differently and what they should keep consistent.

Geography

Geography has always been a subject that I have been good at, and has just come naturally to me. This is a subject that compliments the field of History, especially when discussing the 13 original colonies and early American History. Lessons such as printing off a blank map of the United States and having students label both the State and the capital of each state is the easiest, and most effective way at learning Geography.

Government & Politics

I have a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from the University of Kentucky. I took a wide variety of courses within the Political Science arena, from theories to international relations style courses.

Social Studies

I have a Bachelors of Arts degrees in Political Science and History from the University of Kentucky. Both of these degrees are essential in the realm of Social Studies, as by definition, Social Studies comprises of subjects like history, geography, and civics. In addition, I am seeking my teaching certification in social studies, and so gaining experience tutoring will be a fantastic asset.
