About Jacqueline

I graduated from Dartmouth College where I majored in Government, and I specialize in standardized test prep for the SAT, the PSAT, the LSAT, and a variety of AP subject tests. I have scored in the 98-99th percentile on all of these, and am eager to help you reach that level as well. In addition to reviewing and taking each of these tests myself, I have extensive experience helping students to prepare for these tests, both in-person and online via other popular tutoring platforms. I am prepared to teach you a variety of strategies for these tests, ranging from improved reading comprehension to time saving tips. I also keep up to date with the newest test revisions and strategies, and have already taught over 30 hours of specialized test prep for the newest 2016 SAT alone. Students that I've worked with have reported feeling more confident about their abilities, more familiar with the testing material, and more optimistic about their test scores.

Apart from test prep, most of my teaching experience comes from working with high school students in policy debate, where I acted as a coach and mentor helping to prepare them for speech competitions. I have also worked for several months as part of the faculty and teaching staff at specialized debate institutes, so I am comfortable working in a more academic, curriculum based environment. Based on my past experiences, I feel that it is very important to connect with my students and to have a strong working relationship, so I try to make the subject as enjoyable and painless as possible. This means that I will always approach each lesson with enthusiasm and encouragement, so that students will never feel bored or disengaged.

I am a great math tutor because I have a strong understanding of all the fundamental concepts, and can explain it in an intuitively appealing way to students. I am extremely patient when the student needs it, but can also recognize when we need a change of pace or to try a new approach. Keeping the student engaged is particularly important when it comes to math; a lesson should involve constant examples and back-and-forth discussion, rather than a lecture.

Growing up in a Chinese-speaking household, I have always been an avid learner of both the written and spoken language. I am great if you want a conversational partner to practice Chinese with, as I am very familiar with the different intonations and pitches that make up spoken Chinese. I'm also an excellent choice if you'd like someone to help with writing essays or learning new characters, due to my long-time enrollment in various Chinese educational courses.

I'm looking forward to working with you and helping you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I believe I am qualified to tutor in Chinese due to my fluency in the language. I have a minor in Asian Languages, specifically Chinese, and have grown up in a Chinese speaking household. On standardized tests, I got both an 800 on my Chinese SAT and a 5 on the Chinese AP exam, so I would be a good fit for a high school student looking to review for that exam. In terms of specific methods I would use, I have had drill instructor training at Dartmouth, and also know how to keep the topics fresh by focusing on pop culture or interesting articles, rather than reading mundane textbook conversations.

Public Speaking

I have extensive experience with public speaking due to my involvement in competitive policy debate, both in high school and college. I was nationally ranked in both high school and college, and I have also worked with many younger students as a coach and mentor teaching them how to develop effective arguments, speaking skills, and build up their confidence. In a more formal setting, I have been hired multiple summer terms at the seasonal Dartmouth Debate Institute as part of the teaching staff, so I have also worked with students on public speaking in a more academic, rigorous environment.
