About Bret

Salutations!

I am an imaginative, passionate, fun-loving fellow who has over ten years of experience as a tutor and five years of professional teaching experience at the high school level. My qualifications include a Masters of Secondary Education, with an endorsement in English Language Arts, from the University of New Mexico and a Masters of Divinity in Eastern Religions/Contemplative Spirituality from Naropa University. Thirsting for adventure and cross cultural exchange, I have taught in some unique environments, including a Native American Pueblo in Zuni, New Mexico during my stint with ‘Teach for America,’ as well as a Himalayan village in the remote country of Bhutan. Recently I worked at the Goodwill Excel Center in Austin, a unique charter high school for adult learners.

As a lifelong learner, dedicated to the principles of critical thinking, curiosity, and creative expression, I have a strong desire to help students overcome obstacles and flourish in their academic endeavors. My approach is often outside-the-box, my lessons are usually lively, and my focus is always student-centered. I enjoy one-to-one and small group tutoring because it allows for mindful, deep engagement with the material and fosters accelerated growth in the subject area. Within the field of English Language Arts, I especially love helping students gain confidence in writing and public speaking, two of the most dreaded academic endeavors that I believe can transform into passions with a little effort, time, and, of course, the assistance of a good teacher!

I look forward to helping you succeed! Please contact me for further inquiry and to schedule tutoring sessions. I will be as flexible and accommodating as possible. Thanks.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I am a high school English teacher who teaches speech and debate classes; I also hold a Masters of Divinity and have experience giving homilies and officiating weddings. I can assist with a wide variety of speeches as well as all components of the creation process: pre-writing, organizing, outlining, drafting, structure, style, and delivery. If you're looking for something more theatrical, I've also dabbled a fair bit in the performing arts. I've got the moxie and pizzazz for the all too often dreaded art of public speaking, so please hit me up for assistance on your next big project!
