About Katie

Hi! Thanks for considering me as a tutor. Currently, I work full-time as an elementary school teacher supporting struggling learners in a Montessori environment. I have six years of teaching experience in elementary and high schools. My favorite part of teaching and tutoring is working with struggling learners. Often, schools can't meet individual needs because of rigid methods and environments. But, I am committed in changing this 'one size fits all' perspective by helping students strategize to learn and advocate for themselves.

My goal as a tutor is to build strong relationships to personalize learning for my clients. I want to help students find connection to the knowledge and skills in front of them. I know motivation can begin to grow once trust is established between a learner and their environment. As I tutor, this means I'm very attuned to proper pacing and goal setting. Communication with parents and support networks is essential for students to feel successful. It is essential that this communication includes frequent assessment and feedback.

I have a strong background in working with students with learning differences and special needs. I am certified as a special education teacher for grades K-12 in the state of Texas. I'm also certified in the Wilson Reading System, an Orton-Gillingham based program for those with dyslexia and related learning disabilities. I have worked closely with students struggling with ADHD and emotional/behavioral issues in elementary and high school settings. When someone is struggling with a learning difference, I want to guide them to own and understand what isn't working. We can then strategize methods that are proven to lead to success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
