About Jason

My teaching philosophy has always been "Give them a fish and they'll eat for a day, teach them how to fish and they'll eat forever." Without a routine in place to reach your goals and feel confident, it is so easy for students to feel overwhelmed while their assignments pile up. It is my goal to learn my clients' learning styles and personalities in order to see what will specifically help them to succeed.

After receiving my masters degree in education, I had the pleasure of working as a classroom teacher and tutor for ten years with various age groups and demographics. The common thread I have always seen is that once students are able to pinpoint their specific misunderstandings, they can take their first step toward building a foundation and feeling more powerful in their abilities. I specialize in elementary grades and test prep. I assign just enough homework for students to maintain an understanding of the material while still allowing for time to let it absorb properly.

I keep mathematical skill-building fast paced and engaging. I have a fun, conversational, stress-free approach that actually helps students enjoy learning!

I am a reader, blogger, public speaker, and lover of stand-up comedy. As an early teenager, I remember noticing an abundance of misused apostrophes, commas, and quotation marks everywhere I looked. I started carrying a marker around with me, making corrections wherever necessary. I was kind of like a superhero, but only for grammar and punctuation. And without a cape.

My fee is $60/hour, and I am willing to meet you at home or anywhere else that is convenient for you. Just email me to discuss scheduling.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

I have played drums since the age of 10 and enjoy breaking down the actual mechanics of drumming. Once the coordination of it becomes second nature, my clients are always amazed at seeing what they can do!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught all elementary grades from 2004-present.

Elementary Math

I work with math students from early elementary all the way up through high school. I specialize in strengthening their mathematical foundation and critical thinking.

English

I am a certified teacher and have worked on all aspects of language arts with students of all ages, in and out of the classroom.

Handwriting

I have worked with kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade on manuscript and cursive handwriting. Handwriting Without Tears was the book we used for our handwriting curriculum. Learning proper handwriting is absolutely essential! Students are able to express themselves and organize their thoughts so much more efficiently when they learn to form letters properly.

Phonics

The phonics program I used with my kindergarteners, 1st, and 2nd graders was Saxon Phonics and Spelling. My students started with letter/sound correspondence, CVC words, and word endings to digraphs, blends, diphthongs, while building dictionaries of high frequency words. Even during my student teaching, I really enjoyed working with students on phonics. I loved seeing the looks on their faces when they would string sounds together and realize, "I'M READING!"

Public Speaking

I am a certified teacher, and I have helped students of all ages to speak confidently to an audience. I have directed plays, coached debates and speeches, and even hosted open mics in my classroom.

Songwriting

I have been a singer/songwriter since middle school. My main musical project is called The Lennings.

STAAR

I have tutored and taught students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade in preparation for the STAAR test. I have also proctored the exam several times, so I know how to prepare students not only for the material tested, but also the specific conditions of the testing environment.

Study Skills

This is a skill that is often overlooked. Students are rarely specifically taught how to study. I enjoy working with students to understand their personality and habits so they can find a method of studying that will truly help them in their academic career and beyond.
