About Olivier

Born in Paris May 1961 in the 19th arrondissement, I grew up in the 13th arr. where I went to kinder garden, elementary, middle school and high school. Then on to the Faculté of Jussieu at Paris IV. In September of 1988 I moved to Austin, TX where I have been living since, surrounded by a large group of other Frenchies whom I have been friends with since before we all migrated. In Austin, I have developed a career as a musician which has taken me touring all over the US, and as a mechanic in the vintage car, truck and motorcycle field. I also had a 9 year venture into interactive development where I worked for a renown San Francisco based PR firm, which I helped establish an Austin based office. Somehow, through these occupations, I always managed to find myself in a tutoring position. I taught guitar and music to all age groups and skill levels, I trained interactive developers while working in the PR field. More recently I coached young engineering students from France in automotive electrical wiring. But French language has been the one consistent tutoring subject I've maintained throughout my 27 years in the States.

Brought up in a family in which grownups put the accent on impeccable grammar, syntax and orthography, I acquired early on a strong knowledge base and feel for correct, both written and spoken French. Growing up I read books and magazines on a regular basis, in the school context and on my own initiative. My high school cycle and graduation was in A sections which are literature and arts. Latin was an essential part of the program for my last 6 years of school. I have consistently studied the works of Molière and P. Corneille, but also those of B. Vian and R. Queneau with a passion.

During my life in the US I have kept in close touch with my French group of close friends in Austin. Having that element in my life as a Texan has helped me stay in touch with my French identity over the years. Frequent trips back to France and constant contact with my family and friends overseas have allowed me to keep track of France's socio-cultural evolution. I listen to French radio every single day.

I consider essential to be able to communicate perfectly with students in their native tongue, without the shadow of a potential misunderstanding. While neither a British nor American native, I am able to compose this profile without outside help, what you see/read is what you get. My pronunciation and conversation in English are up to just about anyone’s higher standards. I studied English in high school with some previous notions of the language. I then carried on improving my skills through motion pictures, books and music. My pronunciation is not excessively foreign nor affected by any distinctive regional accent. I lived in England in my early 20’s and as I said, have been living in Austin, TX for over 25 years.

At the start of any tutoring method should be a good assessment of the student's level of knowledge and practice, and of the student’s ambition and goals. Whether the student’s goal is to develop basic conversational skills, acquire basic conjugation and verb forms, or just expand on an existing solid grasp of French, there are efficient and fun ways to custom tailor the tuition to their personality and tastes. Following a textbook is important to keep a reference and keep the student aware of their improvements. But the most attractive part of a lesson is one in which the student’s poles of interests are in focus, and learning becomes an automatic process in the background. I strongly believe in lifting the eyes up and away from textbooks at some point and getting a whiff of the language in context. It can be achieved through dissecting some iconic French movie, documenting the social and historical context or picking apart lines of dialogue, it can also be done by hanging out for a moment with a group of French friends and flow into the conversation, or simply by reading through a book to understand how written French is constructed to convey specific ideas. To me this is the most important part of the tuition because it reveals the depth and nuances of French beyond the written words. My goal as a teacher will always be that the experience of learning French is enjoyable and useful.

If you are looking to:
- acquire basic pronunciation and travel phrases
- develop a basic knowledge of French using textbooks
- improve your conversational skills and understanding of the everyday spoken language
- develop your sense of depth and nuances of French to better your ability to express your own ideas and thoughts
- immerse yourself in French culture with in-context medias such as music, books and movies of all eras and genres
- get into a knee-deep exploration of the complex French grammar, orthography and etymology
... participate in a learning experience custom tailored to your personality and tastes, I can help you out.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
