About Dianne

Hello! I'm Dianne S. I'm a New York State certified teacher (English Language Arts, grades 7-12), with a Master of Arts in Adolescent English Education (summa cum laude). I've completed graduate coursework in teaching Shakespeare, and a Bachelor of Arts in English literature (magna cum laude), as well as 31 credits of elementary education coursework. I have twelve years of writing/proofreading/editing experience (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and academic manuscripts, and seven years of tutoring experience.

I specialize in teaching literary analysis and essay writing. High school and college students alike must be able to interpret a text in multiple ways, to find evidence for their interpretations, and to construct a well-reasoned essay. I have long experience helping students of all ability levels learn to read, think, and write critically. I can prepare middle school students for the demands of high school writing, help high school students transition from the five-paragraph essay to college-level work professors will praise, and provide remedial help to college students whose K-12 education didn’t prepare them adequately.

I also have considerable experience with college application essays. All the students I’ve ever worked with on their college application essays have gotten into the college of their choice. I can help a student refine an existing draft to catch the eye of an admissions officer, or work with him/her from initial drafting through the finished product.

I can help with SAT and ACT essays, too! Standardized test preparation, sadly, isn’t about the student’s mastery of content knowledge; it’s a measure of how well the student understands the demands of the test. I know the ins and outs of these exams, and will be able to bolster my student’s confidence. (I can also help students with reading comprehension/vocabulary practice, provided the practice material is available online.)

I especially love teaching Shakespeare. “No Fear Shakespeare” can provide a working translation of the bard’s plays and sonnets, but his more subtle wordplay—and the historical context behind the words—is lost. I’m delighted to help students of all ages read and interpret his plays and poetry.

If your child is struggling to write formal poetry (sonnets, villanelles, triolets and so on), or having trouble reading and decoding poetry from any time period, I’m the tutor for you! I can teach the craft of structured poetry writing, removing the mystery from such jargon as “anapestic trimeter” and “iambic pentameter.” My students will be able to pinpoint literary devices in poetry, and will understand how they work—both in general, and in the context of any specific poem.

I have twelve years of experience writing, proofreading and revising both fiction and nonfiction works. I’m meticulous about correcting grammar, spelling, and mechanical errors, and can suggest changes to improve organization and style.

Please contact me to learn more, or to schedule lessons. (As I do not drive, they will have to be online lessons, but I am as effective in a virtual classroom as in person, and online tutoring can also offer considerable convenience to the student.) I look forward to meeting you and beginning our work together!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
