About Austin

Hey there! I'm Austin B., a 27 year old male with a true passion for education and a focus in accounting, business, tax prep, excel, and music. Before Wyzant, I tutored various business subjects all throughout my university/graduate years (2007-2012) and had great success with my college-age students. Some of my past students still remind me and thank me for getting through a tough course with my patient, one-on-one tutoring. Subjects ranged from financial accounting, cost accounting, managerial accounting, economics, finance, statistics, tax, and algebra. I am happy to report continued success with my past and current Wyzant students.

As for my experience with elementary/middle school children, I was a camp counselor at Camp Longhorn (Burnet, TX) for over 4 years, and absolutely loved it! Although many may not consider that to be traditional tutoring in the educational sense, I would argue that it taught me even more about how to communicate and interact with the kids to create a playful, yet instructive environment. I taught countless children how to sail for their first time, learn different swimming stokes, build their confidence to swim a mile across an open lake, play all different kinds of sports, etc. I learned very quickly how to build a great rapport with my campers, and there was always a mutual respect for each other. Campers ranged from 8-16 years old.

In high school, part of my responsibility as the drum captain was to tutor, mentor, and lead my fellow drummers. Often times I would break us out into one-on-one sessions, or small groups, where I was able to not only develop my own abilities, but learn how to teach music, theory, and rhythm to various students.

All of my experience has taught me that every student responds to certain teaching techniques a little differently. I've learned to communicate, and find out what works best for each particular student.

I prefer one-on-one tutoring and enjoy engaging my students with challenging and relate-able real world examples. I feel that it really helps allow my students to fully understand the relevance and importance of learning and using their knowledge as tools in their everyday lives.

Education/Qualifications:
Bachelor of Business Administration, Texas State University, San Marcos (Magna Cum Laude)
Masters of Accountancy, Texas State University, San Marcos (Magna Cum Laude)
Certified Public Accountant - Texas - Current
Work Experience: Public Accounting/Audit, Financial Reporting, Technical Accounting Research, Tax Preparation

Math:
I have always been a math nerd. They were my favorite subjects growing up, and I can't remember a time where I didn't achieve an A in my math subjects, all the way up to my college calculus and statistics courses. But Algebra is where I really excelled, and it's where I enjoy tutoring the most. I find success with my students by giving them real world examples/applications of relevant math problems, and teaching simple-to-remember techniques that can apply to the full spectrum of algebra for various types of equations.

Accounting:
My higher education is focused around accounting, and business. Since then, I've had public accounting audit experience on large, global, SEC clients with Ernst & Young in Houston, TX. My years there instilled more business and accounting knowledge into me than I could've ever asked for! ... or so I thought. I currently work in the financial reporting group for a $1+ billion company that started-up in 2012. This environment has really pushed my boundaries as far as technical accounting, and has helped me to grow and understand the full spectrum of financial, managerial, and cost accounting.

Music/Drums:
Music has always been a passion of mine. I've been playing drums since I joined the middle school band at 8 years old. In high school, I was the drum captain and center snare for my last two years. This provided me opportunities to not only build my chops, but to develop my teaching skills. A drumline is only as good as their weakest link, and it was my responsibility to make sure that nobody was falling behind. I specialize in building on a students abilities and chops by teaching proper technique, rudiments, fun exercises/cadences, how to read music (including sight-reading), and how to have an ear when playing with others. I have also played drumset for the last 6 years, but teach this at the beginner level.

If you are interested in improving your abilities, and getting ahead of your fellow students, please reach out to me to learn more and schedule a lesson with me! I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

I am a practicing Texas Certified Public Accountant with a Bachelor in Business Administration, and a Masters in Accountancy with years of Big4 experience in public accounting audit with global/SEC clients ranging across the spectrum of the business world. I also have experience in financial reporting, and specialize in technical accounting areas such as foreign currency implications, equity-based compensation, impairment, etc.

After graduating with a Bachelor in Business Administration and a Masters of Accountancy, I went on to become a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Texas, which is still current. I worked over 3+ years with Ernst & Young doing public accounting audit. This is really where my core business knowledge is derived. Being in that role, you have the ability to see through the looking glass, if you will, into many different types of businesses, industries, management teams, and competitive environments.

Drums

I played percussion in the school band since 6th grade. In highschool, I played center snare and was the drum captain for 2 years. I went to countless practices and played live performances.
