I have experience as a kindergarten, first grade, special education, ESL and middle school executive functioning teacher. I was also the interventionist/learning specialist at a private school, working with a variety of learning needs and specializing in reading fluency and comprehension, dyslexia and written expression. I have a passion for helping students understand their unique challenges and developing a plan together that will help them achieve their learning goals. I have helped countless students make meaningful improvement and have maintained long-term tutoring relationships with families. I can help students with anything from handwriting, homework and organization to more severe learning disabilities.
I have experience using the Wilson reading system to help students with dyslexia make progress in reading. I have help those without dyslexia improve with general reading skills by acquiring new vocabulary and utilizing fluency building techniques. With younger students I focus more on phonics and guided reading to build fluency and strong comprehension skills.
I am a certified special education teacher with experience teaching both resource and inclusion students. I am comfortable altering or coming up with curriculum to meet a student's unique needs.
Spelling can be taught in a number of different ways. It depends on what type of learner a student is and what is most impactful when learning spelling patterns. It is important to first assess the students needs in spelling and what will be most impactful way for them to learn.
I have flexibility in times throughout the day and I'm happy to work with parents and students at their convenience. I am happy to communication with classroom teachers as it may be necessary to coordinate assignments and ensure that goals are aligned. In addition to working with a student in their home it is also possible to meet at alternative locations or at school during the school day. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have over 10 years of experience of working with elementary students, teaching kindergarten and first grades as a classroom teacher as well as outside of the classroom in the special education setting. I feel confident assisting younger students in all subject areas, especially reading and writing.
I have taught dyslexic students using The Wilson Reading System for over four years with documented success. The Wilson Reading System utilizes research based techniques to improve reading fluency. I worked with students four days a week in 45 minutes sessions. I attend yearly update meeting to make sure to have the most current information on the program.
I have taught handwriting skills to students in full classrooms and in a one-on-one setting using Zaner-Blozer and Handwriting Without Tears Curriculum.

I have K-12 Special Education certification and have worked with students with varying disabilities. Whether it was working in small groups outside of the classroom, aiding students within their classroom environment, or tutoring a student one-on-one I am able to gain an understanding of the students needs and implement instruction as necessary. Along with Special Education certification, I have experience and success working with students who qualify for 504, especially dyslexia.
I have taught and executive functioning course at the middle school level using curriculum from the Rush Neurobehavioral Center and Premier Specialty for 3 years as well as taught a middle school book study class based on the book 7 habits of highly effective teens. The executive functioning class help students with organizational, study and behavioral/self-monitoring skills.
I have nine years experience as a teacher, the last four of which were spent as an interventionist. I assisted elementary students in all areas including writing and currently assist students in writing as a private tutor. I have used intervention programs or have customized intervention based on specific need or classroom assignment or project. I typically assist student through heavy planning prior to writing and then provide assistance through the execution of the plan as well as through help revising and editing. A strong focus is placed on the 6 Traits of Writing, however instruction is tailored based on an individuals goals and needs.
