Hello! My name is Kandice Spera, and I am an Midwestern transplant living in Austin for the past three years. I have enjoyed every second of living in Texas; the state has all kinds of activities and cultures. Traveling to experience new cultures and places is one of favorite hobbies. However, another one of my favorite things is learning, which is probably why I love traveling so much - anyone can learn countless information anywhere he or she goes. I never once disliked school, and so after high school, I decided to continue my education and attend college at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. I graduated with magna cum laude honors and a degree in Environmental Science and Geography; instead of going to graduate school right away, I decided to work for a year. I have been working as an Environmental Project Manager for the State of Texas for three years, and decided to enroll in graduate school in 2014. I am currently enrolled in an online graduate school program through the University of Denver and will be graduating in June 2016 with a Masters of Science in Environmental Policy and Management.
Throughout my educational career, I have tutored and helped numerous students, and estimate that I have a total of two to four years of tutoring experience. I love tutoring, because I highly enjoy watching people transition from despising learning, to realizing the beauty of learning. My tutoring style is unique, as I believe that all success first begins with confidence. I will work with my students to first believe in their potential to learn any type of material. I also implement hands-on learning, whether it's going outside to examine the parts of a flower, conducting a simple and safe science experience, or using a giant white board to work through examples until the material clicks. My tutoring methods work, because they instill a sense of fun and confidence into learning - the first step to educational success!
When it comes to math and tutoring, a giant white board is my best friend. Students really understand math when they can see and work through examples over and over again until the process clicks. Once students realize that math is a subject full of different processes, they can easily learn the steps through visualization.
Textbook writing is my life right about now. I write everyday for work and everyday for school. To write a successful essay or report, students need to develop a pattern within the document. After years of perfecting this specific pattern, I can teach my students how write wonderful, well-structured essays and reports.
Art is my number one talent. I studied several different mediums for 12 years, and have won numerous awards. One of my pieces was displayed in the Fort Wayne art museum for a period of time. I am able to teach my students a number of techniques to create beautiful and unique pieces of art.
If you would like to start learning materials in a fun and engaging way, I encourage you to contact me to discuss your learning needs and to schedule lessons! Cheers! Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
