About Louise

I am a career teacher with over twenty-five years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher. My background and experience in early childhood education taught me the importance of creating a child-centered, nurturing environment which invites students to actively participate in their own learning, regardless of age. To me, meeting a child’s social and emotional needs is as important as meeting academic goals. It is a pleasure for me to share in my students’ joy as they develop self-confidence and learn to love learning!

In addition to my years in the classroom, I have many years of tutoring experience as well. I worked as an instructor for Sylvan Learning Center for many years with students in grades k-8 in all subjects and 9-12 in reading, language arts and study skills. When I lived in Australia, I was an ESL tutor for students who were new to the country. I assisted them with learning the language and with special projects. I also taught an after school writing class. I am comfortable teaching all elementary and middle school subjects, and consider writing to be my strong suit.

I look forward to getting to know your child and becoming part of the team to help make your youngster a joyful lifelong learner!

When I was a kid, I suffered from math anxiety, so I am empathetic when my students feel overwhelmed and frustrated by math. I always tell them not to worry, because I KNOW they will get it—maybe not the first time, or even the second, but it will happen, as long as they keep at it. I have been teaching pre-algebra to special needs students for the last couple of years with great results! I have a wonderful rapport with my students, and a repertoire of strategies including manipulatives when appropriate, math journals for recording and referencing important concepts, formulas, and procedures, and the use of individual white boards for practice work. Woven into each lesson following instruction, is guided practice, independent practice and review as well as abundant praise and high fives for effort as well as mastery.

When it comes to English, I know my stuff! I can slice it, dice it, and help students put it all back together so that it makes sense. I enjoy working with language, whether it is vocabulary, analogies, or grammar. I also enjoy working with students on reading skills, hoping that my enthusiasm is contagious and that they too will develop into life-long readers and learners. My strong suit, however, is writing. I use the Six Traits to teach the basics of writing, and employ writing samples, literature, and group/partner work to lessen the anxiety and "writer's block" that so many youngsters feel. To me there is nothing like the pure joy I feel when a child who could barely write a short sentence or paragraph blooms into a prolific, descriptive writer with his/her own voice!

When students are having difficulty in school, learning can be a chore. I see my job as not only helping kids academically, but as helping them to feel better about themselves too. If your child needs support, it would be my pleasure to be part of the team to make learning a more pleasurable experience for your youngster. I look forward to hearing from you and hope to meet you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
