About Marina

I know first-hand how challenging it can be to learn a language. I was born in Russia and struggled to master English in middle school. My practice SAT and ACT English scores were low enough for me to be concerned about getting into college. However, I was able to substantially raise my grades, ACT and SAT scores through hard work and study techniques that I will be happy to share with you.

I received a double-major in Chemistry and English from Williams College, one of the "Little Ivies." I went on to receive a Master of Public Health Nutrition from the University of Washington, where I tutored undergraduates as a Teaching Assistant. I also worked with students from first to twelfth grade as a Power Hour Tutor at the North Seattle Boys and Girls Club. Furthermore, I taught children in preschool as an AmeriCorps team member in the Jumpstart program.

I have a B.A. in English from Williams College. I understand the challenges of mastering the language and improving your writing and reading comprehension skills. I will patiently teach you techniques to raise your test scores and overall performance.

I am a native Russian speaker, but I know the challenges of learning a language first-hand from my struggles to master English. Learning works best when it's fun; I keep my students engaged by customizing lessons to match the interests of my students.

I have a wide range of experiences working with children of all ages as well as adult learners. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or to schedule lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have an B.A. in English from Williams College in MA, but I learned to speak English in ESL classes when I moved to the US as a fourth grader. I therefore have first-hand experience with ESL classes and understand which techniques are more helpful.

Nutrition

I graduated with my Master of Public Health Nutrition degree from the University of Washington in Seattle in 2014. As a graduate student within the Nutritional Sciences department, I worked as a Teaching Assistant and helped undergraduate students prepare for exams during office hours and study sessions. I became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist in January of 2015. I teach patients with diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension about how to tailor their diet to their condition(s) at the Volunteer Healthcare Clinic in Austin, TX.

Russian

I am a native Russian speaker; Russian was my first and primary language until I moved to America at the age of ten. Since then, I have kept up my Russian by speaking the language with my parents and friends as well as by reading Russian newspapers and blogs. I also tutored classmates as a student at Williams College and later as a graduate student the University of Washington in Seattle. I am now an active participant in the weekly "Russian Table" in Austin, TX, helping fellow participants who are not fluent to master the language.

Study Skills

I developed good study skills during my years in high school. My study skills were tested at Williams College, where I double majored in English and Chemistry. My college experience allows me to understand the skills needed for success in both science and the humanities.

I later decided to get a masters degree and sharpened my study skills when I prepared to take the GRE. I attended the University of Washington - Seattle, where I received my Master of Public Health Nutrition degree and a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist certification.

These accomplishments required a variety of study skills - organization techniques, visual learning, auditory learning and kinesthetic learning. All three can be helpful, but the key is to identify what most interests you about the material you are studying.

To quote Mary Poppins:
"In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and Snap! the job's a game/ and every task you undertake becomes a piece of cake..."

Writing

I have a B.A. in English and have published many pieces of writing over the years.

Thorough, thoughtful and well-organized tutor

I really enjoyed my tutoring session with Marina. She had prepared a really thoughtful lesson plan with texts and videos that helped me improve my language skills while also getting more insight into Russian culture. She did a great job explaining concepts of the language as well as correcting my grammar and pronunciation, and was very patient throughout the session. Highly recommended as a tutor.
