University of Arizona (Environmental Scienc)
Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, TX (Graduate Coursework)
I am 57 years old and didn't begin college until I was in my 30s! I started at ACC and continued at SWTSU in San Marcos as a Premed student, where I received an award for Academic Excellence from the Dept. of Biology for having a GPA of 4.0 my junior year. I transferred to the University of Arizona and earned a degree in Environmental Science with a focus in Microbiology. I was very interested in, and beginning to learn about, genetic engineering. So it is never too late to grow up and go to college.
I was both an undergraduate and graduate teaching assistant at SWTSU where I instructed chemistry, human A & P, and microbiology laboratory classes. I also tutored chemistry and physics for the University. I studied education at the University for one year as well, and although not yet certified, I am highly qualified to teach chemistry, biology, and environmental science. I was a science teacher at a public charter school for eight years. Now I just want to tutor and watch cartoons.
I think I am an outstanding chemistry tutor because I figured out how to get A's in science classes as an adult, being so far removed from high school. Lots of high school kids are too young to really get chemistry, partly because learning it requires so much attention. I literally read the chapters two or three times each, extracting and outlining the information, and I learned that chemistry textbooks are extremely concise (every sentence seems to be important.) Anyway, I'm not particularly brighter than anyone else, but I was able to translate that material into simple structured ideas that, maybe, I can relate to you. Most importantly, I know what your teacher wants you to know.
So I want to be of service to you. I want you to get an A in General Chemistry. (Keep in mind that at this time I do not wish to tutor Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry (Quantitative Analysis) or Biochemistry, but perhaps I will in the future.) Please give me as much advance notice as you can before cancelling an appointment (24 hours is nice). There is a library next to my apartment, which is also nice. Call me. You'll find chemistry can be very interesting once you begin to get it and make good grades. That's something you'll always be proud of! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
