Math PhD & software engineer who loves teaching
I'm a Math PhD working as a software engineer and data scientist at a startup in Austin. I'm doing this because it's fun and I love teaching.
I taught for ten semesters at the University of Pittsburgh as a lecturer and recitation instructor, and tutored about 2,500 hours during that time (not all on WyzAnt). I've had rewarding tutoring relationships with students at all levels, from elementary to graduate.
I'm happy to chat by phone or online prior to scheduling a tutoring session, if...

Professional, Patient, Encouraging
Jake is professional, patient, and gently encouraging. After just one session, I improved my practice exam score by 30%. That is incredibly significant. He builds confidence and explains things so the material is no longer overwhelming.

Knowledgeable and relatable
Helped with Homework and practiced skill. Pointed out areas of weakness that needs to be strengthened. Received recommendation for further study by providing free resource.

Very in depth and helpful with understanding topics
I had three tutoring sessions with Jake this semester for my calc 2 class. And every time I left the session I felt way more confident about the topics we discussed. Jake was extremely strong at answering the tough questions and breaking them down to be understood easier. Would recommend him to anybody for calculus.

Knowledgeable in the topic
We talked about the definite integral and the limit of sums. This was in preparation for an upcoming Calculus test. I feel more prepared now knowing how to differentiate between the two types of questions.

Very good at meeting at skill level
First meeting was very helpful for me to practice with complex numbers but I need more practice to become more comfortable with testing.

Very Understanding
Today, I asked for help with Physics 2 to make sure I understood the material. I told him that my professor asks students to solve equations symbolically before substituting values and he immediately began emphasizing the methodology of doing so with what he taught. He also went through my textbook and chose some more in-depth questions to walk me through.

Excellent Math Tutor
Jake is a very thoughtful tutor and knows his complex math very well. Neither of us were sure this would work out given this was an on-line lesson as well as the complex nature of the problems; however after discussing the concepts and getting explanations the problems became easier to understand. We completed some problems in a workbook in preparation for a final and hope to do some additional work if we can find mutually agreeable times for these lessons.
