About Patrick

I have been teaching since I graduated from UT Austin with a BA in English and a minor in Computer Science in May 2016. I currently work at the Prometheus Academy, where I teach middle-school reading/composition, and computer programming to middle-school and high-school students. Before that I tutored students with learning difficulties in reading/writing, taught a programming summer camp, and was a substitute teacher for a Critical Thinking class.

In my English classes I focus on in class readings and discussion of the material. I find that reading in class helps students focus, and fosters an atmosphere of respectful listening. The class discussions are invaluable for fleshing out their own ideas by comparing them with those of their classmates which provides perspectives they might not have considered. I also like students to do some writing in class, and present their work to their peers. The writing helps them empathize with the materials they read, and the presentation helps them learn to express themselves in a communal setting without fear or anxiety.

I think that learning to program can help anyone in pursuing their passions. And the best way to learn is to code, a lot, so in my programming classes we focus on projects, like music synthesizers, video games, and even tools that help students in their other courses (like a DNA to amino acid converter). I think that understanding the machine that you're writing code for is essential, so I also make sure students understand what the parts of a computer are, how they work in tandem, and how they can be leveraged to create powerful programs. I have experience with C/C++, Clojure, LISP, Racket, Python, and Java.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

At UT Austin I studied the history of the Hebrew Bible as well as a course in the prophetic books. I have been reading the Bible yearly for 4 years now. I have also taken Northrop Frye's online course on the Bible as Literature which focuses on it's influence on the Western Literary Tradition.

C

I have several years of experience programming in C. I currently am writing a game engine in it, so probably code/debug about 6 hours a day. I also teach C in a programming class at the Prometheus Academy, So I'm familiar with what students find challenging when starting out.

C++

I have several years of experience programming in C++. I teach C++ to students at an academy, as well as use it for many side-projects of my own.

Computer Gaming

I'm a game developer in my spare time, as well as a gamer. I'm familiar with the parts of a computer and how they relate to gaming, since I develop games as well as having built a couple gaming PCs. I know how to design game-engines, gameplay code, and am familiar with Unity. In my programming classes at an academy I have taught students how to make video games.

Computer Programming

I'm a UT Austin graduate with a minor in Computer Science. I am currently a teacher of programming at the Prometheus Academy for middle-school and high-school. In my spare time I'm a game developer where I'm part of a team working on a game engine written from scratch in C++; I've written the Linux platform layer, an animation system for glyphs, a graph editor for scripts, and contributed to a preprocessor for custom metaprogramming.

Computer Science

I'm a UT Austin graduate with a minor in Computer Science. I have a strong grasp of concepts like discrete mathematics, language theory, data-structures, algorithms, and computational complexity. I also have experience teaching programming and computer science to middle school students at the Prometheus Academy.

English

I'm a graduate of UT Austin with a BA in English. I studied literature and linguistics there, so I'm comfortable both with the creative and technical details of English. I'm currently a teacher at an Academy where I teach reading/composition to middle-school students.

Homeschool

I was homeschooled until 16 when I entered the Dual-Credit program at my local community college. I am currently a teacher at the Prometheus Academy which is an organization specializing in science and technology education for homeschool families that may not have the expertise or resources at home.

Linux

I have been using Linux for several years now. In the programming classes I teach we also use Linux, so I have experience teaching Linux to beginners as well.

Literature

I studied literature at UT Austin, with a focus on the classics of English literature (Shakespeare, Chaucer, Milton), and modernism (Joyce, Woolf, etc). I did well in all my courses and am familiar with what professors want. Outside of school I'm a voracious reader, so even if it's something I didn't study in school, there's a good chance I've read it.

Proofreading

I graduated from UT Austin with a BA in English. I have lots of experience writing and revising papers, and I know what professors are looking for. I also have experience teaching composition to middle-school students which means I'm familiar with a lot of common mistakes.
