About Donald

My Experience: I have a Ph.D. Level education (degree status: ABD - All But Dissertation) in analytical and polymer chemistry from the University of Florida.
My Philosophy of Tutoring: YOU are the customer, and it is my job to discern what your specific needs are. I generally ask students what their goals are - mastery of material, help with certain concepts or areas, or simply a better grade. I encourage most students to provide me with the name of the textbook used and the syllabus for the course to that I may direct our time together toward the coursework under study. While I am passionate about chemistry, I truly understand that not everybody wants to be a chemist!

I am a firm believer in applying the concepts used. While sometimes simply approaching material from a different perspective is all that is needed to reach an AHA! moment, often it is practice that improves test taking performance. I can provide you with sample questions to challenge your knowledge of the material and help you to walk into the exam room with a higher level of confidence. General Chemistry can be a daunting course - there is truly a tremendous amount of material presented. Having been a TA for General Chemistry, and seeing the material from the perspective of a Graduate Student, I have observed many students reel from the sensation of whiplash as the subject matter switches from left field to west of OZ. I can assist you in putting things in perspective and helping you to achieve YOUR goals for the course.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
