I have a passion for working with students who would benefit from help in any and all matters relating to English Language Arts. From those who need help with reading, writing, or language development skills to those who need a push from an enthusiastic, fun, and reliable adult, my skill and versatility have proven to be of great assistance to a wide variety of learners. I am a highly qualified teacher with seventeen years-plus working with students. I have worked extensively in one-on-one tutoring settings, have twelve years full-time experience teaching in public schools, and one year teaching English abroad. The majority of my professional experience has been with middle and high school-aged children, but I do have many additional years of tutoring both adults and elementary school students. My Texas teaching certification includes ELA and Reading (grades 4-8 and 8-12), ESOL, Reading Specialist (EC-12), and Art Education.
My own experience as a student include the distinction of valedictorian in high school, two bachelor's degrees, (in Literature and Illustration), Editor in Chief of a University Literature magazine, a Cambridge certification teaching English as a Foreign language, participation in two summer-long writing institutes, over 60 hours of GT and honors professional development, and a Master's degree in Literacy Education with an emphasis in diagnosing and providing intervention for learners with reading development issues.
My greatest success is an unquantifiable one -- I absolutely love working with students and believe strongly that growth is based on a sense of trust. My main goal is to facilitate the confidence that comes with improvement and mastery of a skill. If you have a reluctant learner who regards the work as a chore, I am the tutor who can help make this time truly enjoyable. We discovered lately on that my daughter was struggling in Reading. After only five sessions, we are seeing dramatic improvements in her test grades and her overall average has increased by 10 points! Because we were afraid our daughter will not pass the STAAR test, we have hired her on a weekly basis! I would highly recommend Paige. Our daughter passed the STAAR test, the passing grade was a 50 but she got a 70. Thank you very much Paige, my daughter would never make it without you helping her.
I love how Paige was very patient and kind when she helped my daughter brainstorm admission essay ideas. She is just so present in her conversations. My daughter absolutely loved her!
Paige got my son back on track on reading in so short period of time, after a few lesson he was very confident understanding the reading subjects.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's degree in Education from West Chester University. This program included the coursework required to qualify for a reading specialist certification; half of the classes focused on the diagnosis and intervention strategies necessary to assist students with dyslexia and other reading development issues. I am certified as a Reading Specialist in the state of Texas, and have worked on reading level advancement with dyslexic students in both group and one-on-one settings.
I have a Bachelor's degree in literature from the College of Creative studies at the University of Santa Barbara in California. Additionally, I have thirteen years' experience as an English teacher, and three years' experience as a college reading and writing tutor. In the public school system, I have worked with students ranging from the fifth grade to the twelfth.
I have over ten years' experience teaching ESL in the classroom and have worked with all levels and ages. I spent a year in another country teaching English to rural children, tutored foreign exchange students in college, and conducted conversational English with Russian technology specialists in San Francisco.
I have a Master's in Education which included a three-year intensive literacy program. I am certified in multiple states as a qualified Reading Specialist Instructor.
I have taught in Texas public schools for five years, (with an additional seven years in another state), and each year my classes were amongst the highest in measurable growth in their STAAR test scores. I have worked with high-risk, on-level, and honors/GT students, and have been recognized for my success with improving test-strategy mastery. I have a system that involves helping students to regard the task as an engaging game while systematically improving the time and accuracy with each response. Students who attended my after school study sessions approached me later to tell me how much my tips helped.
