My lifelong passion has always been to help students realize their full potential by using creative teaching methods, by addressing their unique learning styles, and by building their confidence. I have taught English and Language Arts to sophomores, juniors, and seniors (including AP, TAG, and Honor students). Most of my students' standardized test scores were in the higher than average percentiles, and some did remarkably well.
Now that I am retired, I enjoy tutoring because the feedback allows me to address the students' learning styles and needs immediately. I teach students how to focus on critical and analytical reading using the clues in passages. This is a vital skill when taking standardized tests and when dealing with challenges in the classroom and in life. Frequently, students overlook the importance of ellipses and dashes, italicized words and passages, parenthetical comments and brackets, irony and sarcasm, parallel structure, and figurative language. Therefore, I work with students to develop strategies that will help them to break down passages, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of complex reading material. I use a similar approach when teaching the writing process. We work through the process together until the student becomes proficient with each step, beginning with brainstorming and ending with the final step--the essay.
My teaching methods often provide students with a new way of looking at and dealing with challenging material. Helping students find new strategies to make reading, writing, and literature come alive for them often leads to a renewed interest in reading and a more confident approach to challenges. The constant interaction during a tutoring session benefits the student and, in turn, is gratifying for me as well. I would love to see the "light" go on in your student's eyes with each successful learning experience. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught English Language Arts to sophomores, juniors, and seniors to prepare students for the AP English Literature Exam, the SAT, the ACT, and the STAAR. My students had a higher passing rate than the national average on the AP English Literature Exam, which is a challenging assessment of students' reading comprehension and essay writing. Several of the students whom I have tutored recently in reading comprehension to prepare for the STAAR Reading Exam have attained level three academic excellence.
I taught sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have taken the TAKS (and also AP and SAT tests) and have done well. My teaching methods, strategies, and academic content provide the necessary material and, also, help to hone the skills over which the students will be tested. Most recently I tutored a fifth grade student who did extremely well on the TAKS.
