About Shannon

Hi!
My name is Shannon. I am an experienced high school Language Arts teacher and college instructor with a flair for critical thinking, research papers, and making your writing come to life. I have an M.A. in the humanities, so I can help you with most history, art history, philosophy, religious studies, psychology, sociology, or any other type of academic writing.

I have taught at the college level for three years. Currently, I teach Engl 1301 and Developmental Composition, as well as Writing for Interactive Media and Media Theory. Prior to that I taught high school for 11 years and became a teacher-mentor and Curriculum Coach to help other teachers learn to be more effective. I LOVE writing and have a proven track record getting results with students. I look forward to helping you too!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for three years in a course called Humanities in the Western World which is essentially a Western Civilizations class that started in archaic Greece and spanned to the early Renaissance. It dealt with literature, poetry, art, architecture and history. I feel very comfortable with these topics.

College Counseling

In addition to teaching college English Composition, I taught 12th grade English for 11 years, during which time I assisted the school guidance counselor with arranging guest speakers, recruiters, and college fairs, including campus visits for college-bound seniors. I have tutored students who were writing college essays and studying for placement tests. During my years working at Arizona State I advised incoming graduate students.

Religion

I have approximately 30 credit hours in Religious Studies at the college and graduate level. My Master's thesis committee had a member from the Religious Studies Department. I have college-level coursework in the Old Testament, Islam, Religion in America, the Jewish Tradition, Native American religious traditions, and African-American religious traditions.

Social Studies

I have a Master's in Interdisciplinary Humanities. Many of my undergraduate and graduate courses were cross-listed as history ideas. In fact, the chair of my committee is the director of graduate studies in history, so much of my study was done in what is traditionally known as intellectual history.
