About Mathew

I am currently a French interpreter (medical, insurance, business etc) having recently worked as the French adjunct instructor at Houston Community College. My experience comes not only from teaching but also having lived abroad.

Prior to my work at HCC, I lived in Romilly-sur-Seine in the Champagne-Ardenne region of France, where I worked as an assistant "professeur," teaching English and Japanese, as well as assisting in Math classes taught in English. My passion for language, art and teaching has always been invaluable towards achieving my goals.

In 2013, I graduated as Cum Laude from the University of Houston with a B.A. in French and a minor in Studio Art: my GPA in French being a 3.75. During my time at UH, I worked for two years as the departmental French Tutor and previously tutored Pre-Calculus and Calculus at the tutoring center. While working on my degree, I studied abroad twice, spending time in Angers, France at the Université Catholique de l'Ouest. At UCO, I spent most of my time studying 17th Century French Literature. In particular, my focus was on "La Princesse de Clèves" by Mme de Lafayette. The theme for my "dissertation" was the purpose/function of death (la mort) in her novel.

As with language, my experience with art is abounding. Having judged at the Texas French Symposium on numerous occasions, my input for judging art lead to several changes in longstanding policies. Throughout life, art has played a very important role. Having had formal training from a young age, I have taught/tutored painting (oil, acrylic and watercolor), drawing (ink, pencil, charcoal, pastel) and mixed media. Favorite artists of mine include: Renoir, Pylypchuk, Boucher and many more. My works have been displayed in several exhibitions including the APAHA art exhibit and the Houston Rodeo. Since middle school, I have won several awards: to note a perfect score at the V.A.S.E. competition and 1st place in regional.

Lastly my know-how of teaching/tutoring mathematics in a plethora of ways, has granted my students an individualized facility for learning. From a young age, mathematics was always a strong point. Having finished Algebra 2 by freshman year in high school, math never posed a problem. A recurring thought at the time was, "why aren't some of my peers able to do math?" It came to me that, most classes were taught in one perspective and one perspective only. This didn't cater to all the students and as such, I took it upon myself to teach my peers in a different way... In a mode of thinking that they were capable of. Spending time after school helping those in need with great success gave me the motivation to take on my current career path.

Having said all of that, I am good at working with all age groups but prefer working with high school and above.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I graduated from the University of Houston with a B.A. in French and a minor in Studio Art. The minor in Studio Art requires that each candidate take 33 semester hours of fine arts courses (3-hour credit per course) each course lasting 5 hours a week. I have done art, (drawn, painted, sculpted, etc) for my entire life and won several awards in the competitive part of my life. I have taught drawing in the traditional way which involves the focus on craftsmanship, draughtsmanship and technical skill. Each student I have taught has been catered to according to age and level. Courses of mine involve a life drawing to assess skill level/maturity with the optional portfolio, then by learning about value, line hierarchy and other important aspects of drawing. The "drawing" classes involve any 2D media excluding the paints meaning: pen and ink, graphite, cut paper, pastels, charcoals, mixed media (including water colors but excluding acrylic and oil unless toned down). In addition to having taught, I have also judged art at the Texas French Symposium on multiple occasions.

Knowledgeable, Informative and adaptive

Of all my years in school, I have never had someone so helpful as Mathew has been. He is extremely knowledgeable in not only Japanese, but concepts and language as a whole, as well as new and efficient teaching methods. I was worried at first because I know next to nothing about Japanese, and I know it is a huge undertaking to teach from scratch, but he handled this very well, with many ideas of h
