I'm Julie H., and I have worked as an English and writing tutor, either independently or as part of a larger tutoring center, for four years now. So far, I have experienced great success with my students and would love the opportunity to begin working with you.
I began tutoring 4th and 5th graders at my mother's school who were struggling with reading comprehension, and in my sophomore year of high school I began tutoring my peers in essay writing and analysis. In 2013, I was given the opportunity to work for Lamar University's Writing Center, where I not only helped college students write papers for various English, science, and social science courses but also tutored grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, argumentation, and resume building.
Working at the writing center also provided me the opportunity to learn how to work with students of various needs. I have received training in tutoring students for whom English is a second language, and have worked with many. I have also worked with students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia and even those who were working to recover full cognitive range after suffering a traumatic brain injury or stroke. For this reason, I am confident in my ability to hold writing sessions that provide the maximum benefit to the client.
More than other subjects, English and writing tutoring requires personal, individualized sessions that address a student's specific needs and talents. For this reason I prefer one-on-one sessions and encourage my clients to actively participate in the formation of our tutoring goals. For subjects such as grammar, spelling, and reading comprehension, I like to provide my students with engaging material that they can apply outside the classroom, and I will provide progress reports if requested so that students can see the improvements they have made. For essay help or other writing instruction, I like to sit down with the student and read through the paper together, showing students their strengths and weakness and working with both to produce not only the best paper possible now, but even better papers in the future.
I prefer to meet in public places such as a library or café. I ask that I have an 12 hour notice of canceled appointments, but I am very flexible and willing to reschedule any missed appointments.
I look forward to meeting with you and learning how best to help you meet your academic goals! It was my son's first lesson with Julie. She was able to relate to him and he enjoyed the session. We are looking forward to many more great sessions!
Julie recently started tutoring my twins a month ago, and I've already seen great improvement in their everyday writing. She is excellent in explaining the writing process using different strategies and models. She is always trying to find ways to engage them and exploring different ideas. She is very open to suggestions and is patient and encouraging. I am so glad to have found her on Wyzant.
Julie is well prepared when she came to the first lesson. She is patient, smart and knowledgeable. She quickly made connections with my daughter and she loves her tutor!
My daughter has connected with Julie very well and it is hard for her to sit and learn. Julie has a plan of action and incentives that my daughter loves. It has only been a few weeks and I have seen a big difference in her reading and spelling. Thank you Julie you are a blessing.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with numerous university students with a variety of different writing assignments, including academic essays, technical writing assignments, and grammar and reading homework. I do my best to meet the unique needs of each of my students so that they achieve the greatest level of success possible in their current and all future courses, and I have had the pleasure of watching many of my students' writing ability--and confidence--grow. I'm excited to begin working with new students and see where the right amount of help will take them!
For the past year, I have worked at Lamar University's Writing Center, and I have had to work with many students to help them improve their study skills in classes that were vocabulary, spelling, or grammar intensive. I also recently graduated from an early college entrance program in which I took only full-fledged university courses since the age of 16. I developed very good study habits at this early college entrance program, which allowed me to graduate valedictorian and summa cum laude with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
I have worked at the Lamar University Writing Center for the past two semesters, where I have helped students through every part of the writing process, from researching their topic to forming an argument to making final edits. The feedback I have gotten on my methods have been overwhelmingly positive. I make sure to gear every session towards my client's needs so they might be able to write the best possible essay now and continue writing well after our sessions have ended.
