About Tina

My love of teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning. As a summa cum laude graduate and having taught for many years, I have learned how hard work and dedication can pay off. With an MFA in Creative Writing and having completed graduate coursework as a PhD student in English & Creative Nonfiction, I have vast experience in the fields of writing and literature.

I specialize as a freelance editor (from copyediting to advanced editing), particularly for thesis and dissertation work. I tutor English and Writing for success in school (elementary through college/university level) and on the GRE exam. During tutoring sessions, I keep students challenged, but not overwhelmed. I assign useful homework and provide periodic assessments.

I hold myself to a high standard. For that reason, I often ask for feedback. I hold to a 24 hour cancellation policy but do offer makeup classes.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked as an elementary instructional assistant, primarily in special education, for the South Bay Union School District in San Diego for 15 years. As an assistant, I tutored in reading, writing, special needs, and music. After entering the MFA program at San Diego State University, I continued working with K-6 as a substitute teacher for two years.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked as an ESL Instructor for Converse School of Language in San Diego, California and am currently tutoring two students in ESL and passing the TOEFL.

Reading

I worked as an instructional assistant in the South Bay Union School District for 15 years. Most of my work entailed tutoring special education students one on one or in small groups in reading and phonics, as well as in practicing their spelling list words each week. I have been trained in the LindaMoodBell phonics program as well as in working with students three years or more below grade level.
