About Michael

Tutoring: I can offer excellent support and instruction on all writing projects: test preparation; academic writing for the humanities, social sciences, business, and hard sciences; ESL/EFL; and developmental writing for all ages. I focus on a process-orientated approach to composition--tested for 5 years teaching within universities--so that students become habituated to and comfortable with their needed writing style both in the assignment in front of us and in all other assignments. Writing becomes a tool, a habit, rather than a task. I have received very positive student and professional evaluations teaching composition, literature, and business/technical writing within two- and four-year universities in New York City and Austin and an American branch campus in China. I have taught and tutored high school and college students for 6 years.
Background: I graduated with BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, after which I spent a year tutoring K-12 in English and test preparation. I then earned an MA in English from the University at Buffalo (SUNY) while tutoring high school students. I taught English for one year at Missouri State's branch campus at the Liaoning Normal University in Dalian, China to a set of international English-learning students. Enrolling in the Doctoral English program at the City University of New York's Graduate Center, I taught English composition, research papers, and technical business writing at LaGuardia Community College (CUNY) and Lehman College (CUNY). I taught a year of British Literature at Austin Community College, tutored for ACC's language lab in literature and philosophy, worked as a Writing Across the Curriculum Fellow at Medgar Evers College (CUNY), and am currently teaching composition at ACC to high school students for dual credit. I am writing my doctoral dissertation on the history and literature of science.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
