About Victor

I've had a lifelong love of math and science. I recall when I first started school at a boarding school in Guatemala that we were asked to state what we wanted to be when we grew up. I stated I wanted to be a scientist. Well, I did, in a way. I became a computer scientist. But I'm interested in almost all sciences and mathematics.

I started college as a biology major thinking I'd get a degree in botany. Through the course of study, I changed my major to mathematics, and I got a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Dallas.

I was involved in the startup of a program to introduce Project Seed to the Dallas area. Project Seed is a program where college level math is taught to third grade inner city youth.

Subjects I will tutor include all levels of science and math up through high school algebra, geometry, trigonometry, biology, botany and basic chemistry. I can tutor certain college-level subjects, too, for example set theory and calculus.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Discrete Math

I have a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the University of Dallas. Course work there included discrete math. Course name at the University of Dallas was Linear Point Set Theory. Other coursework included college algebra, computer science, game theory, probability, number theory, and topology.

Since discrete math is a wide subject, potential tutoring in this area would likely require a vetting process to ensure there is a good intersection between what is needed and my background.

Film

Although I have limited 16mm film experience, my main film experience is a spinoff of my photography experience. In 2008, when the Canon 5D Mark II was announced, I purchased one in part because of its breakthrough ability to shoot high definition video. That was a first for DSLRs. I took advantage of the 5D Mark II's video features and learned digital videography, producing several short films and a bunch of videos.

I've entered two 48 Film Festival competitions, as executive producer for one and director of photography for the other.

I'm currently moderator of a "Digital Video Talk" forum.

My focus on teaching film would be specific to filming with digital SLR cameras and all that accompanies them, including sound. Aspects of making a film, including selecting a crew, equipment needed, and editing could be discussed. Concentration would be on technical aspects of the filming process.

Pascal

I attended the University of Dallas, where Pascal was used as the language for most of the computer sciences classes. In addition to taking all the classes, I was the teacher assistant/grader/tutor for a couple of them.

In addition to university-related activities, I have also programmed in Pascal throughout my career as a programmer.

Photography

I have been a photographer since the 1970s, switching over to digital in the early 90s. I shoot professionally and maintain a website. Additionally, I am a moderator of the Pro Digital Talk forum at a digital photography review website.

Video Production

My video production experience is a spinoff of my photography experience. In 2008, when the Canon 5D Mark II was announced, I purchased one. Its breakthrough ability to shoot high definition video set it apart from other DSLR cameras at the time. I took advantage of the 5D Mark II's features and learned digital videography.

Since that time, I've made many videos using the Canon 5D Mark II as well as other cameras. I've entered two 48 Film Festival competitions, as executive producer for one and director of photography for the other. I've also done considerable work with sound editing and video editing in Sony Vegas.

I'm currently moderator of a Digital Video Talk forum.

My focus on teaching video production would be specific to digital SLR cameras and all that accompanies them, including sound. Where editing is concerned, I would concentrate on Sony Vegas and possible separate sound editing.
