About Thomas

Attention Students and Parents:
Do you need help to be a successful learner in your course of study? Look no further. I offer intensive personalized tutoring geared to your goals and interests for accelerated in-depth learning to ensure your success.

About me and my approach:
My passion for teaching and learning go back as far as I can remember. Playtime in my young life centered on meaningful learning where toys became objects to explore, examine, and manipulate, in the process of learning. These early learning adventures with my parents carried forth to my interaction with playmates, friends, and relatives. There was always something new to learn and I seemed to always be in a teaching mode, sharing with those around me in our efforts to learn more about the world around us. From these early activities, it was noticeable that my interest and natural ability in Mathematics and Science were beginning to surface. Of equal importance, I figured out how I learned best and how to engage others so that they would learn most effectively as well.
Later, my undergraduate and graduate study at three prestigious universities furthered my quest for learning. For my undergraduate study at the University of Wisconsin, I chose History as my major. Then, I went to the University of Michigan Law School. Following these two degrees, I believed that there was still more that I wanted to learn about History, and this led to obtaining a Ph.D. degree in U.S. History, from the University of North Carolina. These degrees and my projects thereafter were financed primarily by tutoring middle school, high school, and college students in mathematics and science, subjects that have continued to be my areas of natural ability and interest. Even today, the research which led to the Ph.D. has also encouraged me to continue to examine and learn more about these two areas of study. Overall, subjects that I have experience and skill in teaching and building students' competency through tutoring are Mathematics, Chemistry, History, Reading and Writing strategies, and English as a Second Language.

In my role as tutor, I will concentrate on developing your skills in each area of study, for immediate proficiency to meet a test standard, and for long-term proficiency to enhance your life. Essentially, I employ three different methods for ensuring your success:
(1) learning about your interests, your thinking and learning style, and your background knowledge in the subject area and in a range of other areas;
(2) designing strategies to accelerate your learning of important principles, concepts, and skills associated with learning the essence of the subject, rather than isolated facts or memorization;
(3) working cooperatively with you for developing an individualized plan of action to address our specific needs and goals, assuring both your accountability and mine. The plan includes responsibilities and work arrangements, a timeline for achieving goals, and a method of assessing performance and progress.
Parental involvement is encouraged and communication with your teacher may be initiated early in the process, as your learning plan is implemented.

In addition to helping you get high grades, my ultimate goal as a tutor is to instill a love of learning by coaching you in how to learn--how to think through a particular learning task, what learning strategies to employ, and what to do when confusion occurs and learning breaks down--so that you are confident and competent in any learning task, not just the specific tutoring assignment. My commitment is to be available to you at all times, even while I prepare you with strategies to move toward greater and greater independence.

I have over a decade of experience employing this process with my students, in various subjects, including Mathematics, History, Chemistry, and English as a Second Language. Math is a particular strength for me, and in that field I have been able to allay students' fears and approach the subject in an accessible and even fun way, enabling students to gain the insight, motivation, and skill necessary to succeed, in an area they had already set aside for failure. Through my learning strategies, you will be empowered with the confidence to do well on the tests, but also to approach the learning of difficult subjects in a new, enjoyable way that will stay with you throughout your life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have 10 years of ESL teaching and tutoring experience.

GRE

Perfect score GRE quantitative. Ph.D. in U.S. History. Twelve years tutoring, mostly in Math and Science

Study Skills

I grew up in a teachers' household, and organization was always a priority. I learned that succeeding in school was not only a matter of working hard; it was also a matter of working smart: efficient use of time and intelligent allocation of resources.
I applied these principles to get through Law School and through a Ph.D. program, in U.S. History. My training in History has given me insights into being resourceful when performing research, problem solving, and troubleshooting. Also, teaching English as a Second Language has prepared me to teach effective study skills. Many ESL students are from poor backgrounds, and have to work a lot just to make ends meet. Often, they do not have time to commit to doing a lot of homework and preparation outside the classroom and they just have to make do with the time they do have. I have learned to maximize their learning given the time constraints they are under.
It is always great to have enough time to get ready for a test, but with the rigors of school, sometimes you need to be able to do well even if you don't have enough time. I am an expert in getting the most out whatever situation the student finds themselves in.
