About Thomas

Graduating in 2005 from The St. Mark's School of Texas and then the University of Texas at Dallas, I have always been trained and excelled in critical thinking and mathematics. My success in these fields is largely attributable to an education which focused much more on process than solution. Think of this as give a man a fish vs teach a man how to fish. In the same way you can teach him to fish, you can impart a deeper understanding of the subject at hand which will provide for continued success.

There are a lot of great teachers out there but there are even more students. Because of this, teachers have to pick a way of representing material that will resonate with the highest number of students. Unfortunately this system leaves behind a fair number of students by no fault of their own. What is even more unfortunate is that teachers don't have a lot of freedom in choosing how to teach material so they get stuck presenting it one way. This is why in many cases non-teachers by profession can actually help even more. As a software engineer by trade, I have to find different and intuitive ways to solve problems every day. Learning is NOT a one size fits all experience and my job is to find the size and style that fits my students on an individual basis.

While my specialties lie in mathematics, I am also able to help with reading comprehension, English, and one of my niches: resume writing.

Regarding standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, etc. there is no substitution for practice, however, a guiding hand can definitely make the difference between average and outstanding. With a 34 on the ACT and a 1520 SAT (Pre-2006 1600 total score), I can provide that helping hand by going over your tests and focusing on the problem areas to get you the best score you can.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
