About Amanda

I love teaching! This is my eighth year as a certified English Language Arts, Reading and ESL teacher, and my tenth year as a tutor for many, many other subjects. I currently teach high school English for Speakers of Other Languages and Read 180, and I co-teach Algebra 1 and World History.

I also really love learning. Before my high school graduation, I sat down and thought about what professions there were where I could continue doing "school stuff" (reading, writing, learning new things) forever. Teaching was really the only choice for me. I received my BA in English from Texas A&M University in 2010 and my M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction in 2011. I would have liked to have double-majored in Spanish, and although I wasn't able to due to the additional coursework, I have studied Spanish throughout high school and up through junior-level coursework in college. I have also participated in, judged, coached and sponsored high school debate for the last ten years.

My favorite thing about teaching and tutoring is being able to have fun with learning. I don't do long lectures, I don't do rote memorization, and I never lose my patience or my temper. I do insist that each student give me his or her very best effort every day, and I know that my students expect the very best from me as well, including flexibility with teaching strategies, putting in overtime, and doing whatever it takes to help them be successful.

I would love to tutor you or your child in English, ESL, TOEFL prep, reading, writing, composition, literature, or speaking (6th-college), math (6th-Algebra 1), social studies (6th-10th), Spanish 1 or 2, SAT/ACT prep, or piano (I've been playing piano for 20 years). Good study habits and organizational skills are also important, and I am more than willing to provide those in my tutoring sessions. What my students learn from me is not just English or math or any other subject. It's a new way of life, either through learning a new language or learning that education is the key to a better future. I hope to be able to pass those lessons along to my new tutoring students. Thank you for your consideration.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

This is my fourth year to co-teach Algebra 1 at the high school level. I am familiar with the content of the course as well as the content and design of STAAR/EOC exams. I frequently work with both native and non-native speakers of English to master the content of the class and build fundamental math skills that students may not already have.

Elementary (K-6th)

As part of my M.Ed. program, I studied curriculum and instructional methods for elementary students. I regularly tutor elementary students in reading, math and piano. I have experience working with elementary students who are gifted and talented, who have ADHD, and who need intensive remediation in reading and writing.

English

This is my fifth year to teach English II for sophomore ESL students, although I am certified to teach English to native speakers and ESL students grades 8-12. I have a BA in English, and my college coursework focused on literature, rhetoric and composition.

ESL/ESOL

My primary teaching certification is secondary ESL. I have taught high school ESL for five years, and I helped teach an adult ESL class in the spring semester of last year, through a local organization that provides assistance to newly arrived immigrants.

Geography

I have a strong background in all social studies subjects, and geography in particular has always interested me. I have worked with high school World Geography classes and students, and I am familiar with the material students are expected to master for geography at the middle and high school levels.

Grammar

I specialize in teaching grammar to students who struggle with it. My background in English, ESL and linguistics gives me a foundation from which I am able to teach students of all ages the most basic grammatical structures of English, as well as the most complex.

Literature

I studied literature extensively in college. I took separate courses in Shakespeare, Milton, T.S. Eliot, British literature, American literature, world literature, Hispanic literature, adolescent literature, and the lyrics of Bruce Springsteen. My English students learn how to read, analyze and interpret literature based on the background of the piece and the author and the wider context of history.

Piano

I started studying piano when I was 5 years old (20 years ago). I have studied performance, composition and theory, and I have several years of experience teaching piano and keyboard instruments to others. I have taught beginners to read music. With more advanced students, I have worked extensively toward their mastery of small parts of performance pieces, working up to larger chunks and finally the whole piece at performance tempo.

Prealgebra

I have team-taught remedial Algebra 1 for three years. I am familiar with the skills students need to know to be successful in Algebra 1, as well as common areas of difficulty and ways to address those difficulties.

Proofreading

I can help with proofreading, revising and editing. I regularly proofread various assignments for high school and college students, as well as resumes and letters of interest for employment applications for students and friends.

Public Speaking

I participated in debate for all four years of high school and advanced past district competition several times. In college, I helped coach, judge, and organize debate tournaments. I have worked as a debate sponsor for two years. I routinely prepare and deliver presentations for faculty members and administration in my current position.

Reading

Reading is the most important skill needed for academic success. I have worked with students at all levels of reading mastery, from beginning ELLs who do not know how to read any English, to college students who are having difficulty interpreting reading assignments. I also help students master strategies for improving reading comprehension, such as questioning, summarizing and paraphrasing.

Social Studies

I have worked with high school World Geography and World History classes for the last four years. I have a broad understanding of social studies concepts (culture, government, geography, development indicators, etc.) as well as specific knowledge of history and different countries and regions.

Spanish

I studied Spanish for four years in high school and two and a half years in college, up to junior-level coursework (Contrastive Grammar). Most of my ESL work is with Spanish speakers, and for beginning English speakers I have to use bilingual instruction in Spanish and English. I am proficient in Spanish grammar and vocabulary, both informal and academic.

Spelling

Aside from placing in UIL Spelling & Vocabulary at the state level in high school, I work with students at all English levels on mastering the confusing and sometimes difficult spelling rules (and exceptions) of English.

TOEFL

I am familiar with the structure and content of the TOEFL exam. I help students prepare for the exam by practicing listening, speaking, reading and writing, with an emphasis on reading and listening comprehension within the time allowed, and production of good grammar and vocabulary for the speaking and writing tasks.

Vocabulary

A key part of working with students of any age and any background is building vocabulary. I help students with learning everyday vocabulary, more advanced academic terminology, and techniques to help them understand, study, and remember the new words they learn.

World History

This is my second year to I am co-teach World History at the high school level. I am familiar with all periods of world history (Paleolithic up through modern), but my area of greatest expertise is the 20th century.

Writing

I work with students at all levels of writing ability. I can start with the basics of sentence construction, then move to paragraph and essay writing, and finally to higher-level assignments (speeches, research, creative writing, etc.) as each individual student's writing ability progresses.
