About Alexis

Ahoy mateys!

I have taught elementary school (4th-6th grades in West Philadelphia) through college (University of Texas at Austin theatre/dance department), and I find joy in every age. Mainly, I find great richness in connecting with learners and discovering their best processes for understanding themselves, new information, and growing in unanticipated ways in whatever subject matter we might be exploring! Though I have taught environmental sciences and early American history, my true passions are in the creative, language, and performing arts. I am a professional actor (completed my MFA in acting this past spring and headed to NY to work with an agent); what does this mean as a teacher/tutor? It means I have a deep, abiding love for language, structure, and expression. I appreciate the very many ways that stories are told and communicated as well as received. I have an eye for audiences, be they readers or watchers, and I am a professional listener. I also cannot escape a sense of play and wonder in everything I do, and I tend to teach best through the use of laughter.

I am eager to help you tell your story, be it through public speaking/voice training, college essays, monologue prep, or creative writing. I am excited to help you gain more familiarity and ease with the spoken and written words, grammatical structures, and general to advanced vocabulary. I am happy to assist you finding your best way to prep for a test so that your study skills actually stick in a way that is useful for you on the day of the test.

The individual has an incredible ability to learn and grow, and I am always excited and honored to be a part of another person's journey towards understanding themselves and the world we live in to a greater depth.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught elementary school at a small independent school in West Philadelphia (Jubilee School - look it up!). Because it was such a small and intimate environment, I got to jump around to different subjects and learn a lot of different approaches to dealing with varying learning styles. I am sensitive to age-specific needs as well as behavioral and social challenges that affect the school challenges of young people.

Public Speaking

As part of my MFA training, I studied Vocal Techniques. For two years of Voice work, I trained to prepare, sustain, and use my speaking voice. I then proceeded to teach an undergraduate class in the topic. I have years of experience as an actor and classroom teacher preparing for public situations. I am excited and pleased to share my love for public speaking with others and to help those who fear it find ways to relax and enjoy the experience in a professional and productive way.

Theatre

I have performed my entire life in a large variety of contexts, and I have taught theatre at camps, after-school programs, and in individual coaching. Most recently, I received my MFA in Acting from the University of Texas at Austin where I taught undergraduate theatre classes while getting my degree. I currently work as a professional actor in New York City.
