About Rose

My experience and background:
I graduated from UT in 2013 with a B.S. in Neurobiology with Honors.
GPA = 3.62
AP BC Calculus: 5
SAT Math II: 780
GRE quantitative: 87th percentile

I have tutored over 400 hours in the last 3 years. As a student, I received straight A's throughout high school and college in all my tutoring subjects. I am also a creative and friendly person, so I am able to evaluate each student's needs in order to best engage, encourage, and teach them the material. Asides from subject-matter tutoring, I also worked at the UT Learning Center for a year, so I can help students with time management and efficient study skills.

I currently work at UT as a laboratory technician in the Institute for Cellular and Molecular Biology. In the future I aspire to go back to school for an M.S. in Chemical Engineering.

About me:
I enjoy working with people and I love math and science! It is a challenge that keeps me on my feet. I have to communicate difficult concepts to students with a wide range of personalities, interest levels, skill levels, and learning styles. I love helping others reach their highest potential in school but also understand how stressful that can be. I would love to have the chance to help you confidently reach your goals. It's important to teach students (and myself) to gain a greater appreciation for learning itself, outside of test scores and rankings. Outside of the fascinating world of science, I enjoy playing with my dog, listening to music, playing classical piano, running, and being outside.

How I approach tutoring:
1) I embrace the cliche that everyone is different. Everyone has different goals and levels of interest in math and science. Personally, I love math and science. Some students share this love, some do not. Some just want to get through so they can focus on their interests. Some learn better working with a human being rather than drudging through homework alone. Some are perfectionists. I acknowledge these goals and desires instead of projecting my own onto students.
2) Everyone learns a little bit differently. As a tutor, this is why I have to think on my feet. If I explain something one way and the student is still confused, I must explain it another way, or draw something, or guide them as they talk through it themselves.
3) I can follow or lead. Some students come with tons of questions and goals, some need help structuring their needs, and others simply want to work through homework. Generally it is some combination of all three.

Suggestions for students:
Please prepare in advance! The more you prepare, the less time is wasted. I know life is busy and this is not always possible, but anything helps. Here are some ideas:
-> Skim over your notes and star the tricky concepts
-> Prepare a few questions
-> Start your homework (or better yet, attempt everything!) so you don't end up paying me to watch you do easy problems
-> Get your notes and homework and old tests in order so that you don't waste tutoring time while I watch you shuffle through papers

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Organic Chemistry

I recently graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Neurobiology with Honors (GPA 3.62), which required a multitude of chemistry and biology classes for which Organic Chemistry was a prerequisite. I received an A in both Organic Chemistry I and II, and have one student I am currently tutoring in Organic Chemistry. I worked as a Peer Academic Coach at the UT Learning Center for two semesters, where I organized lessons to help UT students one-on-one with study skills and test taking, which are imperative for success in demanding courses like Organic Chemistry. My experience also includes several months tutoring a student in remedial middle school math and a university student in biology.

Study Skills

I worked for one year as a Peer Academic Coach at the University of Texas at Austin Sanger Learning Center. My role was to help university students with studying, prioritization, concentration, and test-taking. I structured my sessions with a review from the previous week, preview of the current topic, discussion/guided demonstration/independent practice of the topic, and ended with a session review and assignment for the week.
