I retired from teaching middle and high school science with 20 years' experience in 2013. In my last school, I taught Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, and tutored students for TAKS and STAAR tests. I also taught middle school integrated science at a previous school, and have helped students with organization and study skills. I am certified grades 6-12 for science. Since 2013, I have been tutoring middle and high school students in sciences and math.

I would highly recommend Mary Ann for anyone looking for a tutor. This is our second school year working with Mary Ann and she has helped with grades 6-9. She has helped the kids raise science/ math and English grades but even more importantly they now have confidence. My 9th grader recently was struggling with a summer reading assignment. Mary Ann was able to help and point her in the right direction without giving her the information- a talent which I don't possess. She really is worth her weight in gold!! Ultimately my daughter ended up getting a 97 on an assignment she was convinced she would fail. That confidence is now helping on future assignments. Don't hesitate to use Mary Ann as a tutor!
The first lesson was great! Mary Ann went above and beyond to make Luke feel welcome during the lesson. She was prepared and created a comfortable environment to help Luke understand the different parts of math that he has been struggling with during the last 6 to 12 weeks.
Mary Ann was patient and very thorough. She has great ideas, and we are looking very forward to seeing progress.
My son is finally understanding geometry. Raised his grade from 55 to 92!! Happy I made the decision to hire a private tutor.
Mary Ann is a great tutor. My daughter has met with her several times and each time she learns so much more than she is learning from her teacher at school. My daughter has been having a hard time with chemistry and she understands the concepts and materials after meeting with Mary Ann. Mary Ann is also very caring. I wish we had started tutoring at the beginning of the year. Thank you!
She is very nice and soft spoken. My daughter likes the way she teaches and the different ways of explaining a math problem. Mary Ann is already making a difference!
Mary Ann helped my son review for his algebra 1 and biology finals. He felt much more confident about the content after working with Mary Ann.
We had a good session learning physics and working through problems. Very calm and patient with us. Very much appreciated.
She helped my daughter go over a review for a test. I think they were able to cement some formulas and get ready to do really well on the test.
We worked on some basic math concepts, including perfect squares, factoring, square roots, negative exponents, and order of operations. Mary Ann answered all of my questions and had no problem explaining things in different ways to help me understand concepts more clearly.
My freshman has been struggling with Geometry for a while now. It felt like after one tutoring session with Mary Ann, things were definitely clicking and making more sense to him. He even announced after the session 'I get it now Mum. I'm going to ace my next geometry test, you watch'. I love his attitude. He's gone from feeling like he can't do it to feeling like he can and that is fantastic. He was very reluctant to get tutoring but after one session with Mary Ann he realized that it was absolutely worth it. Apart from learning geometry, I actually think he enjoyed himself too! She arrived punctually and got straight into teaching. She has a very encouraging approach and applied just the right amount of firmness for my teenage boy to keep him engaged and working the whole time. Highly recommend Mary Ann as a tutor.
My daughter has ADD/ADHD and needs a lot of help focusing and someone to redirect her when she wanders. Mary Ann is perfect with her and very patient. I highly recommend her.
Mary Ann holds my son accountable by asking him if he turns in his work and asking him about test grades. She is a good teacher and my son listens to her and together they get a lot of work done.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught Physics for 10 years, using algebra skills and reteaching as students needed help. I have been tutoring in Algebra and Geometry since I retired from teaching in 2013, with success in improving grades and passing the Algebra STAAR.
I have tutored in Algebra since retiring from teaching in 2013. I use skills honed in practical applications in Physics to help students understand Algebra concepts. In tutoring, I have learned how to use a graphing calculator to manage difficult tasks such as solving 3 equations with three unknowns using matrices.
I have taught high school biology and middle school life sciences. I have been actively tutoring in biology since retiring in 2013. I have helped students understand concepts, improve grades, and pass the Biology STAAR.
I have 16 college hours in chemistry with an A in all courses. I have taught chemistry at the high school level for six years. I have tutored Chemistry since retiring in 2013.
I enjoy helping students understand the concepts of math and develop number sense that will enable them to do well in math in middle and high school. I have taught middle school and high school sciences, using the math students were learning in math classes in my science classes to reinforce the math and solve problems in science. I have expanded my tutoring to encompass 4th and 5th grade, and 6th grade students who are getting ready for algebra.
I have a degree in English and I love to read an eclectic mix of genres. I have had experience with teaching students to read articles and find the important points to discuss and write about in their science classes. I have tutored students in English writing since I retired from teaching.
I have used geometry concepts in teaching physics. This involved collaborating with the math teachers in my academy to develop lessons that enabled students to solve physics problems using the math they were studying. This practice kept my math skills current. A student I have been tutoring in geometry had been failing; after five weeks of tutoring, he scored an A on his semester final in Geometry.
I taught middle school science for 7 years and high school physical science another 6 years. I have had courses in physics and chemistry as well as continuing education in teaching to all levels of students, from learning disabled to pre-AP. Labs that enable students to understand concepts are my favorite part of teaching physical science.
I taught high school physics for the last five years before I retired in 2013. I have many ways of illustrating difficult concepts to help students understand. I have been tutoring in physics since I retired.
I have worked with students taking pre-Algebra as a teacher and as a tutor. I have an understanding of the concepts and their importance to further math studies, and have used many techniques to help students master the concepts.
