About Suzan

Hello!! I have seven years of classroom experience, six years of tutoring experience, a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University (English Major and Education Minor), and a Master of Science degree from Erikson Institute (Early Childhood Education). I am a six-time Alliance for Early Childhood Teacher Tribute recipient, an honor awarded to Chicago-area teachers who demonstrate excellence in the classroom.

During the fall of my third year teaching, I started tutoring weekends. Initially, I saw tutoring as a way to boost my resume and earn some income (both appealing incentives to me); however, along the way, I also discovered that I loved it. I read and analyzed Shakespeare with a sophomore, guided a 6th grader as he composed an essay on wisdom, and studied Greek and Latin roots with an 8th grader. I explained the parts of the heart to a 4th grader and reviewed ratios and proportions with a 7th grader. I was inspired and stimulated.

In 2010, I attended a 30-hour workshop about the Responsive Classroom method. While the workshop first and foremost helped guide my classroom management style, it also taught me the importance of viewing academic success and social-emotional skills simultaneously. When one suffers, so, too, does the other. One-on-one instruction is an investment, but the benefits are vast. With me, you will have a coach and a teammate; someone who loves teaching as much as she loves learning. I identify gaps in knowledge, offers enrichment, teaches and fine-tunes study skills, builds confidence, and help students juggle the growing demands of school and extra-curricular activities. The reason to seek tutoring is unique to each family and my instruction is designed to fit the specific need placed in front of me.

My husband, Mike, our 2 year old daughter, Elza, and I moved from Chicago last summer and currently live in Circle C Ranch. We have a 3 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback, named Paisley, and a 9 year old cat, named Andie.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my Master's in Early Childhood Education from Erikson Institute in Chicago.

Elementary Math

I have taught the enVisionMath curriculum, as well as the Everyday Math curriculum.

Literature

I graduated from Colgate University with a major in English Literature.

Microsoft Word

Though I have never taught a formal class, I have helped many family members use Microsoft Word for a variety of projects. I would be happy to help a student of any age become more fluent with this PC program.

I am also now familiar with Pages, the Apple version of Word -- I took a workshop that taught me how to integrate Pages, Numbers, and Keynote into my classroom. There are so many amazing possibilities!

Phonics

I taught phonics to my Kindergarten students using Words Their Way.

Psychology

I took AP Psychology in High School and scored a 4 out of 5 on my AP exam. I also took graduate school courses that covered the discoveries of child development theorists such as Erikson, Piaget, Bronfenbrenner, Kohlberg, Freud, and others. I wrote two 30 page papers on child development theory according to these historical psychologists.
