I am experienced and passionate about helping kids! I have worked with students in public and private schools for 20+ years. By establishing a strong rapport with students, I am able to help them increase their learning and develop more self-confidence in their abilities. I have special expertise in working with students with Aspergers Syndrome and ADHD. I am also skilled in working with elementary age students with reading, spelling and writing skills; I can assist with organizational skills and developing independent learning skills.
By helping students recognize their strengths and each step (regardless of its size) towards a goal, students begin to see themselves as increasingly capable and are more motivated to learn. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Masters Degree in Social Work with over 20 years' experience working with children. I have completed numerous trainings in regards to providing interventions to children with ADHD, done assessments for ADHD, and participated in multidisciplinary teams to meet the needs of ADHD children in the home, at school and in the community. I also utilize behavioral interventions that help children develop more responsible, independent behaviors and increase their ability to attend and focus on tasks more effectively.
I have been certified in Elementary Education for over 25 years. I have experience as an Elementary Teacher in all subject areas in Texas, Louisiana and Florida. I have worked as a teacher in the general ed classroom and with Special Education and Gifted students. In addition, I was employed as a School Social Worker for 14 years and played a key role in developing educational plans for at risk students in a school of over 700 students.
