I have 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring students up to 8th grade. I especially enjoy tutoring grades 3 - 5, ensuring that their math and reading skills are at grade level or above so that they have a smooth and happy transition into the upper grade levels. One-on-one tutoring is a wonderful way to reach students who are struggling in a regular classroom setting, or who need concepts repeated or explained in a different way. I am certified in Elementary Education K-6, as well as in Math up to 9th grade, and I work with students transitioning through Pre-Algebra to Algebra I. I am a native English speaker, a writer, and an editor. You can be sure that your child is in good hands and will benefit greatly from this tutoring experience. Parents will receive weekly feedback, as well as ideas to use at home.

Susan was great! Very sweet and wasn't intimidating according to my son. When I asked him how it went he said AWESOME because she made it easy to understand! That meant everything to me!!! And this is just the first meeting. So we look forward to seeing her again!!
Susan has been my daughter's tutor for a few months and I have seen a lot of improvement in her grades. My daughter is in 4th grade and never liked/enjoyed math. Susan has helped her tremendously. She is very patient and always find ways to make my daughter understand the math material. My daughter now enjoys doing math, something that never happened before.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 8 years of experience teaching and tutoring students up to 8th grade. I love teaching elementary students. They almost always find learning something new to be interesting, and they pay attention when subjects are presented in a fun manner. I have lots of experience both teaching and tutoring this age group, from beginning phonics and reading and early addition, through beginning chapter books and learning multiplication tables, all the way through fractions and long division, writing essays, and reading novels. It's so important to get the basics early so that students can feel confident as they transition into the upper grades. And yes, I also focus on FCAT subjects, although again, a strong base in each subject should prepare a student for any skills assessment - so that there is not any apprehension or pressure when test time comes around.
To begin to teach reading using phonics, I would first do a quick evaluation to see how much the child already knows. At that point, we will work with level-appropriate manipulatives and/or flashcards, practicing letters, blends, and beyond. Dr. Seuss books are great tools for this!
