In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a professional editor with experience proofreading and editing a wide range of technical and non-technical subject matters, from journal articles to dissertations to material for a general audience.
I have many years of teaching experience, from middle school through graduate school. In addition, I have many years of tutoring experience covering elementary through college-aged students. Both my teaching and tutoring have emphasized mastery of knowledge through critical thinking and inquiry as opposed to memorization. Teaching study skills is just an extension of this approach.
My PhD in botany includes coursework in zoology, ecology, and evolutionary biology. I have conducted zoological research on insects, fish, mammals, and birds. I have co-authored a book chapter and a national guidance document on the wildlife impacts of climate change. I have managed a state program focused on the conservation of plants and animals.
