I teach ESL and reading. I love literature and languages and enjoy meeting and teaching foreign adult students. I think it's important for students to understand and speak English as it is really spoken, but, I insist that my students learn correct grammar when they write. I have many tricks to make it fun. I use a variety of resources to teach, including music lyrics and TV shows which are all good ways to get "an ear" for the language.
I am an Oxford certified ESL, TESOL, TESL teacher and have taken graduate classes in Bi-lingual Education, but actually, I have been teaching English since Elementary school, unofficially, because my parents were immigrants to the USA from Peru.
I work at a non-profit Literacy organization in Austin and my job involves a lot of teaching.
I have recently been trained in the Wilson Reading Method and am beginning to work with low-level readers of all ages in addition to teaching ESL. Elena is an excellent tutor, and she likes to teach. She's very patient and knows how to encourage her students. My writing and grammar skills have been improved by her. She makes the lesson fun and exciting by trying different methods. Also, she likes to help and responds fast to her students. Thanks so much Elena.
Elena is a great tutor: very patient, helpful, always available. She starts teaching from the first class, which is very important (you do not waste your time and money to introduce each other, because your goal is to get knowledge). She does not mind staying an extra 5-10 mins. after class and answering your questions. And I just love her as a person!
Elena is very patient and well prepared. I meet with her every Sunday and she will bring copies of things that I need to learn and I have learned so much from her. I will love to work with her again in the future.
She taught me for TOEFL speaking portion. She prepared a lot of information for this test. She is friendly and patient! I really like her. Thank you so much.
Elena has provided some concrete homework for my husband to acquire the English language. I noticed that he is more familiar with letters, their sounds, and words. This is only after 3 sessions.
The best recipe to pass the TOEFL: I was lucky when I chose Elena as my tutor. She is a dedicated, conscientious, compassionate teacher and helped me a lot to improve my language and to pass the TOEFL. I scored an 89. Thank you, Elena, you rock!
Elena is a subject matter expert of how to help a student to achieve a goal. I am amazed on how Elena was able to create a curriculum tuned to my specific needs. Elena has all her lessons planned and her assignments give me an ample opportunity to practice new skills. Elena’s enthusiasm, a caring attitude, and a love of learning have made a great difference in my confidence to communicate in English. Thank you, Elena! You Rock! See you at our next class.
She is very kind and very patient to explain. Furthermore, she is full of passion to help me to improve my English. Individually, I prefer correcting my mistake. She corrects my English mistake by reviewing my writing and speaking. Furthermore, she sometimes helped me to call to discuss about difficult problems like insurance. It was a great helpful!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I write for fun and for me it is such a pleasure to find exactly the right word to convey what I want to say. I know for some it's a chore but I think I can convince you that there is joy in writing!
