English language and literature are passions of mine, and my approach to tutoring is to try to inspire the same enthusiasm in pupils. This requires conveying a sense of appreciation for storytelling and awe at the power of the written word. Engagement with texts that will interest students is key.
My tutoring strategy involves helping students realize their own way of understanding and using language. I strive to encourage learners to create their own proper ways of interpreting and expressing ideas and texts, and to feel confident with these.
I was a student of English Literature and Philosophy at the University of Hull in Kingston-upon-Hull, UK, from 2006-2009, and held an International Student Scholarship from 2007-2009. I took my BA with High Honors, near the head of both departments of my joint course, and will happily provide references from my instructors upon request. I look forward eagerly and with positive excitement to hearing from you and setting up a tutoring schedule, and I wish you well until we meet. This is my second year with Justin. He is very flexible, creative, and really inspires my two kids that he tutors.
I highly recommend Justin J. as a tutor for reading and writing. In just a few sessions with our 4th grader, we have noticed an improvement
in his reading and comprehension, interpreting the texts he is reading and inferring information from the text. He has also gained skill and fluency in essay writing and composition. He is more confident about his writing skills. We have noticed that he is a lot more thoughtful in his choice of words when writing, as well as speaking, and his active vocabulary has increased.
Justin is very punctual and professional. I think Justin is very creative in his approach to teaching both reading and writing. He is gentle and encouraging. Even though, we had interviewed other tutors which had several teaching certificates, we found that Justin had the best thought out strategy on how to teach reading comprehension and writing to a young student. He is a person who teaches what he loves and it was
obvious to us that he would be the best choice for our son. He established a friendly but respectful connection with our son from the very first
session and my son's first words about his tutor were, "He is awesome!" After several sessions with Justin, he still thinks so, and so do we.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Grammar defines the rules for structuring words to attain meaningful and sensible expression.
The literary studies that I undertook at university encompassed critical inquiry into classical, monumental texts, their contents, and the contexts in which they were written. This fostered development of skills and familiarity with principles, which I now teach others so that they can learn to understand and appreciate whatever they read.
My experience in proofreading includes academic and professional double-checking and rereading with eyes towards spelling, grammar, and overall flow. I also will give suggestions for development and rewriting.
As a student of philosophy and literature I have learned that good reading requires, above all else, close engagement with a text. Open discussion can facilitate such engagement, as can the critical skills and principles proper to any discipline.
