About Anne

I have enjoyed tutoring high school and undergraduate students for 10 years. I taught undergraduate physics labs at UT for 4 years. I present material in several different ways, including a brief summary, examples, written equations, graphs, and diagrams. I tailor explanations to a student's interest, and ask guiding questions during problem solving, keeping lecturing to a minimum. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

Differential equations are fundamental in modeling any dynamical system, from amusement park rides to circuits. I usually tutor at least one or two students a year heavily in this branch of mathematics. I have a good working knowledge of applications to thermodynamics, quantum and classical mechanics primarily from graduate courses. The introductory course focuses on separable and exact first order equations and linear second order equations. It introduces methods which are simple to break down into small, easy to explain steps. This includes using an integrating factor, reduction of order, a characteristic equation, undetermined coefficients, variation of parameters, series solutions and Laplace transforms to solve DEs. If you find yourself bogged down by derivations and struggling with your homework, I can show you the short path to using these methods like a pro.

Linear Algebra

This branch of mathematics provides a powerful tool for solving systems of linear equations and performing vector operations. My background in this area includes undergraduate linear algebra and applied tensor calculus in graduate electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. I tutor and use linear algebra principles regularly. The algebra of matrices, matrix multiplication and inversion, linear transformations, finding determinants, and an introduction to eigenvalues and eigenvectors are always covered in the introductory course. I also have a good working knowledge of vector operations and properties of hilbert space which are studied more in depth in applied courses. The applications in wave mechanics is important to a variety of fields, such as signal processing, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics.

Great tutor for physics!! — Anne tutored me over the summer for a physics 2 course I was taking through the community college. She was always patient with me and all of my questions (physics definitely wasn't my strong suit so I had A LOT of questions.) If I didn't understand a concept she found a different way to explain it to me that made sense. She was super flexible with setting up meeting times and even agreed to meet w ...
