About Kate

I am a recent graduate of Abilene Christian University. Receiving cum laude honors, I graduated with my BM in Music Education: Voice, K-12.

My certification in the state of Texas will be completed once I am fingerprinted. When I receive my Texas license, I will then apply for a New York state teaching certificate.

I have been giving lessons and tutoring since 7th grade in several educational areas. I teach to the individual and find individual ways of accomplishing the goal of learning: I teach kinesthetically, aurally, and visually.

I currently teach at The Little Gym of Webster, a suburb of Rochester, NY. I also babysit from time to time!

I give 110% to my students! I create quizzes and take-home assignments to further develop skills which cannot be developed in a 1-hour session. Want the best education around? This is the way to go!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have grown up in a Christian home, and I attended a Christian college whose course requirements deemed that I complete 15 hours of Bible studies. I currently teach the junior high Sunday Bible class at my local congregation. I love discovering new things about the Bible that have yet to be revealed to me, and I look forward to sharing the Gospel with anyone who will listen!

Ear Training

I received A's in all of my music ear-training courses in college (SS/ET 1, 2 and ADV SS/ET 1, 2). I am a music education graduate with a GPA of 3.63. I have been commended on my sight-reading abilities and ear-training abilities. I can teach solfege or the number system, though solfege is a much more detailed ear-training process. I used la-based minor instead of do-based minor.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a qualified k-12 educator who received my Bachelor's in Music Education. Having a k-12 degree allows me the ability to teach to all public school students in any area that a school may need my assistance. I have experience tutoring English, Reading, Spelling, Math, Science and Music.

Elementary Math

I always received some of the highest grades in my elementary math courses. I teach using different learning styles, so you can bet you will be reached intellectually!

For me, elementary math means: addition, subtraction, division, long division, multiplication (and mult. tables), basic equations, deciphering paragraphs, basic geometry, decimals, fractions, currency, and even reading time.

If you or someone you know struggles with the aforementioned math components, please contact me for help! I would be glad to help you succeed.

I received my degree in music education, concentration in voice. This degree requires one to learn the flute as well as all instruments in band and orchestra. Because of my extensive musical training prior to college, I tested out of this course.

In high school, I participated in the Texas State Solo and Ensemble competition in a flute trio, substituting at the last minute for a student who failed her classes. I was first chair flautist in high school and had both a flute solo and piccolo solo.

Music History

I took Music History 1: Antiquity-1700 and Music History 2:1700-present. I received a B for the first class and a an A for the second class. I have also taken a Music and World Cultures course and Music Lit course, both of which I received a B. I recently took and passed the TEXES-Music exam, which has a music history component to it.

As a specialist in voice, I was required to take diction courses in college that cover English, French, German and Italian. I have an in-depth understanding of the International Phonetic Alphabet and know how to break down a language in such a way that it will make sense for reading comprehension and verbal recitation of literature. I received A's in all of my diction courses, and I am constantly complimented on my pronunciation. I have taught phonics rules to several children with success.

I have been running my own private piano studio for a year 1/2. I received my music education degree in 2012 from Abilene Christian University (TX) in voice, but I am very knowledgeable of piano and several other musical instruments.

I college, I passed all of my piano courses with an A and received an A on my piano proficiency exam. I can teach all major and minor (3 modes)scales, etudes, and musical works from the beginning to the intermediate levels. I concentrate on theory as it relates to reading and comprehension, technique and learning to appreciate and have fun with music.

Sight Singing

I have taken two years of sight singing and received A's every semester. I consider myself a great sight-singer. Can teach solfege, rhythms, keys, and pointers on figuring out how to sight-sing.

Study Skills

I graduated from college in May 2012 with a 3.63 GPA (cum laude). If it were not for my study skills and organization habits, I would not have been as successful.

I will help you organize each subject in a way that makes sense to you (once we figure out how your mind organizes!). Separate binders, key words, etc. all prepare you to study. When one is organized, one's mind is at peace and can obtain knowledge for efficiently.

I will then teach you memory tricks and help you find educational tools online to make studying easier(flashcard generators, note-taking development, testing anxiety).

Voice (Music)

I have been taking university voice lessons for the past 2 years and sing art songs, arias, recitatives in Spanish, English, French, German and Latin. I have taken Diction courses and have great patience when it comes to teaching. My goals include teaching the correct breath support, getting rid of body and tongue tension, and developing musician's minds.
