National Louis University (Elementary Education)
I just retired after thirty years of teaching all five of the core subjects to kindergartners through fourth graders in Weslaco, Edinburg, San Antonio, Grand Prairie, and Arlington, Texas. I love working with my students, so they truly understand the information I am teaching them and can then apply this knowledge independently to take the work to the next level.
I am looking forward to tutoring one individual student each time I go to teach, so I will be able to give my undivided attention to that one young man or young woman and help him or her to reach the highest potential possible. Stopping short of complete success will not be an option for me or any of the students I tutor.
I taught grammar, writing, and reading to all the fourth graders for the past twelve years in an Arlington, Texas public school. I was responsible for getting my students prepared to pass and excel at the end of year state of Texas exam given every March and April. I am proud to say that more than 90% of my students passed the test each year and more than a third of them got a score of Academic Recognition.
As I taught story writing to my fourth graders, I instilled in all of them the great importance in spelling every grade appropriate word correctly and sounding out the words they don't know, so the word can still be easily read by their audience. From the first day of school and throughout the whole school year, I use and expect my students to use correct D'Nealian handwriting with every word they write, whether it is for school or pleasure. I remind them that it ultimately doesn't matter how enjoyable the author believes his or her written work to be if the person trying to read it can not easily figure out what each word is due to incorrect spelling or poor handwriting skills.
If you are ready to give me your best each time I tutor you, I am ready to help you succeed with your present school work and work with you to achieve life long study skills that will help make you the best you can be at reading, writing, and math. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor K - 6th graders, because I taught kindergarten for 10 years, first grade for 2 years, a second grade / third grade combination class for 1 year, third grade for 3 years, and fourth grade for 14 years in 6 different public schools and 2 different private schools all in Texas. I also taught fifth and sixth graders for several summer school sessions. I tutored many of my third and fourth graders after school in reading and writing 3 days a week for many school years since most of them were ESL students. They needed and wanted to have a chance to practice their English as much as possible, so I provided the opportunity for them during and after school.
I am qualified to tutor every student in handwriting, because I am a strong believer in strengthening a person's ability to use D'Nealian print or cursive whenever he or she needs to write something down. The D'Nealian print strokes lend themselves right to the D'Nealian cursive strokes, so the written word is easy to read. If a student needs to work on their handwriting skills, I have him or her start with paper that has dark top and bottom lines with a broken middle line. Then, the student can easily differentiate whether their written strokes go to the top, middle, bottom, or below the bottom line as he / she prints or writes.
I taught reading to kindergartners through 4th graders for 30 years in the Texas public school system from 1985 - 2015. Since retiring on June 5, 2015, I have been substituting and tutoring kindergartners - 6th graders in Texas.
