About Katharine

I graduated from the University of Oklahoma in May 2014 with my bachelors in Petroleum Engineering and my minor in Geology. Through my course of study, I have taken many classes in math and science. Among these classes are: Calculus I-IV, Differential Equations, Numerical Methods, Geology, Geophysics, Fluid Mechanics, Reservoir Fluid Properties, etc. I have knowledge of grade school math (pre-algebra, algebra 1 & 2, pre-calculus, calculus) and science (biology, anatomy and physiology, geology, physical sciences). I also performed well on my standardized tests (SAT and ACT - all subjects).

I have tutored students in a variety of subjects and have found that the tutoring approach differs from student to student. Therefore, I like to observe the student and identify where mistakes are being made (if any) and correct the behavior through explanation and positive reinforcement. I have a true love and passion for math and science and I feel that is important in a teacher/tutor. In the past I have tutored in math, science, reading, grammar, history, and standardized testing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I took pre-AP algebra in high school and during my time in college used the concepts in all of my coursework - everything from general physics to calculus to numerical methods. Algebra is the foundation for engineering and problem manipulation.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a bachelor's degree in engineering and have tutored grade school youth in all subjects through HOPE Tutoring in the past. I thoroughly understand the subjects taught in elementary school and work well with children. I start by asking the student to show me their/an assignment and perform the tasks at hand. During this time, I observe how they work, figure out what they are doing incorrectly, and help them identify and correct their errors.

Study Skills

During my time in grade school and on through college I have spent quite a bit of time studying and have developed very effective methods of note-taking and studying for myself as well as helping others figure out how to study. I use many methods including flash cards, visual tools, acronyms, rhymes, practice through examples, etc., depending on which subject is at hand. I also find that if there is a way to enjoy or have fun with the subject you're studying, the material will be easier to remember and more interesting overall.

First Lesson / First Impression

My son's least favorite subject has always been math, and his grade reflected his level of interest. I wanted to find a tutor who would personally connect with my son and help change his opinion about math - a core subject. Katharine was prompt and attentive during our first session. She quietly redirected my son's work and managed to get an assignment that would normally take him 3 days to compl
