About Ric

“Consistently enjoyable work sparkles with Ric's beautiful arrangements…” - Billboard Magazine.

I have taught composition-arranging and related subjects (theory) at several colleges and universities and have tutored students from Berklee College of Music and others.

I have written hundreds of pieces of music of all styles and ensembles including for the London Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony and music recorded in LA, Nashville and London for recording projects and film-television. Most recently I have written music for jazz orchestras performed by the Dallas Jazz Orchestra and the American Jazz Composers Orchestra. My music is performed and recorded worldwide. My recordings have won awards and have been featured in Billboard Magazine and many others.

I currently teach at Weatherford College (Texas), also at my studio and online with students worldwide. My students include other college professors. Some of my students have had recent premieres and performances with orchestras and jazz ensembles. I am also the music director-conductor for several jazz orchestras and smaller ensembles (including Weatherford College) which gives my students opportunities for hearing their music performed live. I use all kinds of technology, yet I focus on teaching students to write for "real" players.

PLEASE NOTE:
I have had great success with online (Skype) teaching for composition-arranging. I have computers, iPad and other devises to achieve success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

Music composition includes arranging-orchestration-songwriting-theory and music technology and film scoring.

I teach both traditional and contemporary music styles and have taught at Southwestern Seminary, Biola University and other universities as well as having been the featured workshop instructor for many other organizations.

I have written hundreds of pieces of music that have won awards and have been on radio and television worldwide.

I was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the College Music Society: South-Central Chapter.

Music Theory

Theory is essential for success in music, whether as a writing or performing musician.

To performers I say that your hands will work about as well as what your hands know. For composer-arranger-orchestrators, it is an absolute must.

I am very proud of the fact that I have been able to take many theory-phobic musicians and make them excited about it. It is not the subject itself that scares students, it is how it is presented. I present it very well.

I studied theory under several well-known teachers from USC/UCLA/Yale and others.
I also studied the Schillinger System under John Shafer Smith, who was a student of Joseph Schillinger.

I have tutored theory for a number of colleges and universities (Berklee, Liberty), as well as taught theory along with composition at Southwestern Seminary and Biola University.

I teach both traditional & contemporary theory.

I have also studied Theory Pedagogy at Southwestern Seminary.

I was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the College Music Society: South-Central Chapter.

Songwriting

My songs have been published in audio and print by many artists, publishers and have charted in commercial and digital radio.

They have also been used in television shows and commercials worldwide and have been featured in Billboard Magazine (charting).

They have been recorded in LA, Nashville and other countries.

I was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the College Music Society: South-Central Chapter (Jazz Director).
