I am a certified secondary math teacher (State of Texas) who also had a successful career in business and accounting. I have been the coach of my High School's UIL accounting team, which won its District meet, and I have had over a decade's experience in tutoring students for the SAT, the PSAT, ACT, TAKS and STAAR in all sections of those tests. As a grandfather, with 6 grandchildren, I have a great deal of experience and patience in dealing with young people. As an individual who ran businesses with over 4000 employees, I have experience dealing with adults of all types, as well as customers with many needs. I have had experience tutoring adults in a variety of subjects including the previously mentioned academic subjects, as well as US History, Politics and Government, and writing. During my business career, I was a guest instructor at several universities and I am the author (or co-author) of two technical books in healthcare administration, as well as numerous magazine and journal articles in a variety of subjects.
I am a careful listener and I vary my techniques to match the needs of my students. I do not believe that "one size fits all"; however, I do believe that capability can increase by exercising the mind. No student should ever believe that their future is limited by the past. I am a certified secondary math teacher (State of Texas) who also had a successful career in business and accounting. I have been the coach of my High School's UIL
My first meeting with Mr. Michael D. was wonderful. He is truly God sent and wished I had met him before my first financial accounting exam. I had so much difficulty understanding how to post journal entries, along with comprehending depreciation and what that meant in business terms. For some reason a light bulb clicked on as Mr. D. began to explain and provide examples. He didn't make me feel dumb or stupid. He took the time to break the material down until I understood what I had read and studied in my textbook. I was feeling really defeated before I met with Mr. D. but walked away feeling confident in myself and my ability to do well in my course. I believe Mr. D. is going to be an excellent resource as I venture into other accounting courses and statistics. He is extremely kind and sensitive to the needs of the student. He is patient and really seems to care that you succeed in the course. Truly he is not in the tutoring business for money but loves what he does and wants to help the student excel in their area of interest. Don't pass this tutor up!
Mr. Michael helped me with ACT Math and ACT English. Mr. Michael is patient and I understand his teaching style. He is able to diagnose my weaknesses and adjust lesson to help me understand more. Mr. Michael help me accomplish my reading errors and assist me with understanding math problems that I have struggled with in the past.
Mr. Dunn has helped me in most, if not all of my 8 subjects I have. In the ones where he can't help me, he has taught me how to study more efficiently, and how to go into tests with the correct skills, and confidence. My grades have risen in just the few short weeks that I have met with him, and I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to have Mr. Dunn as my tutor. I strongly recommend Mr. Dunn as a tutor.
We are very fortunate to have found mr Dunn - my son is dyslexic and has ADD yet his tutoring with mr Dunn couldn't go smoother. Mr Dunn is patient, calm, organized and knowledgable. My son Zach is flourishing, it's a pleasure to watch
Michael is tutoring my 8th grade grandson for STAAR Math and Reading. He is very soft spoken and patient, In fact, when I was working with my grandson on some of his math problems, he told me he liked Michael helping him more than me!
Michael was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of accounting. In a short time, he was able to simplify and teach many of the accounting concepts which were confusing me. He was extremely patient and very flexible with my schedule. I would highly recommend him, as he was such an amazing tutor!
Mr. Dunn assisted my 5th grade son with fractions. What really impressed me was the patience that Mr. Dunn has. He does a wonderful job in explaining and making sure that he understood the problems that were being worked on!
We are more than thrilled with Michael, his knowledge, teaching style and ability to connect with our son during their first session! He was patient, kind and extremely helpful. Most of all, our son has been motivated to study believing he can improve with the help of Mr. Michael! We feel he is a godsend and exactly what we were looking for to get our son on the right track. He assessed the situation perfectly in his written recap that we received after his visit which used his uncompensated time - that was above and beyond our expectations. He is a true professional and wonderful human being! Our son is actually looking forward to his next session, and that has never happened with any other tutor. We are very thankful!
I haven't been to school in years and I need a math refresher, Mr. Dunn was very patient with me and I was able to keep up. I learned things about Math I've never even heard of before in one hour. I look forward to my weekly sessions!!
My 6th grader has improved a lot with her Math grades. Michael is very dedicated, very kind and a great tutor!!!!
Mr. Michael is a very patient, knowledgeable tutor.
He recognized my son's "opportunities" immediately
and has been attacking them systematically.
I am well pleased! Thank you, Mr. Michael!
Mr. Micheal D. was a great tutor for my daughter who is a college sophomore. He is a master of accounting and always makes sure to bring out the best of her in studying and understanding the subject. He tutored her ob how to approach the problems correctly and how to recognize the important aspects of every chapter. He was also very patient and always be on time. Overall, I'm very much impressed with Mr. Micheal D. and thank him for all the hard work. It's wonderful to see she made an A in this accounting class. Again, thank you, Mr. Micheal D.
I was reluctant to use a tutor for the reason that I may not get what I want but rather than waste time and money. Michael D. has proven me wrong. Michael is not only very knowledgeable in what he is teaching but he is also a very patient tutor. Michael utilizes his time wisely. He makes sure you understand the materials before he ends the lesson. For some of you that are in the finance field and are on a budget crunch, I highly recommend Michael as your next tutor.
Thank you Michael for your expertise. I'm looking forward to our next session and many more.
Michael knows his subject very well and is able to explain the concepts in a careful, calm manner. He is a true professional in that he teaches accounting in a way that keeps it fun and positive. He is very encouraging. I recommend him highly. Maymesters are rough but he is keeping me on track.
Michael was one of the best tutors I have had. He took the time to explain not just from the textbook but real world. If you want to really learn, this is the tutor I would recommend. Thank you so much for your support.
I was in search for a tutor for both Accounting and Financial Management. These were two of the final courses I needed to complete in order to receive my B.A.S. degree. Math has always been a struggle for me so I knew I needed someone who would be patient with me and take the time to understand my way of learning. Fortunately for me, I found Michael. From day one, Mike supported me and encouraged me. Most of all, he was excited for me to be so close to graduation and he wanted my success as much as I wanted it. He took the time to explain the material in great detail so that we could establish a solid foundation each week to build upon. For eight weeks we met twice a week for several hours at a time. Mike was always on time and ready to work. He was flexible with my schedule and was open to receiving phone calls from me anytime. I have never been excited about learning math and this time I was. I was retaining the material more so than ever before and my self confidence continued to increase with each passing grade. If you are looking for a tutor who is dedicated to your success, builds self confidence, and is with you every step of the way - retain Mike. I promise you won't regret it.
Michael is an experienced and wise person. I am very thankful to have made a connection, albeit and introductory one, with Michael. His wisdom is contagious, and I look forward to absorbing as much knowledge and information he is willing to share, and then using the same in what I hope will be plenty of ministry opportunities.
I am very interested to see how Michael can help me become an effective communicator of the Gospel, and I believe our first assignment together is a step in the right direction. Here is to Michael and many more quality lessons of life and speech communication.
In His Service,
Not only is Mr. D. helping my student with math, but he is helping to make him a better student overall.
I have really enjoyed having Michael as a tutor and am thankful that I found him through Wyzant. Michael is incredibly patient and able to explain things with such ease. He also encourages questions as he wants to make sure you truly understand the material. At our last session he provided me with extra material and clear examples. I strongly recommend Michael as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During a long business career after my formal education, I developed deep expertise in accounting. I have served on many Boards of public and private companies as the Chairman of Audit and Finance. I still serve in that role for two companies. I have hired, supervised and trained hundreds of accounting and finance personnel during my pre-teaching career. I have also managed several successful SEC approved Public offerings.
As a State Certified Secondary Math Teacher, I have had the opportunity to prepare students for all aspects of their ACT, SAT, PSAT, GED and other standardized exams. I have also tutored privately for more than the last 14 years.
My tutoring includes math, English Language Arts, essay writing (when appropriate) and specific subject improvement. I also work with my students to help them become better "test takers", as many lack the careful reading skills and strategies to demonstrate their achievement on standardized exams. All of my tutoring is geared to the individual needs of my students.
I have taught hundreds of Algebra I students, who have been successful, during the last several years. I help my students achieve success by simplifying the subject so my students are able to understand the "why things are true", rather than just the "what is true" in Algebra. Understanding how math works allows students to see how learning math prepares them for real life. I have tutored algebra to students of all ages, from middle school through adults in their careers.
I am a State Certified Secondary Math Teacher who has successfully taught hundreds of Algebra II students during the last few years. Additionally, I have tutored many Algebra students from middle school through graduate school for over 14 years.
I have studied how students learn (recent continuing education at UTA and through the FWISD), so that I can make algebra logical and simplified, so that my students can learn why things work, not just memorize formulas and procedures, which make math overly complicated. I believe that the better the instruction, the simpler the material becomes and the longer the material will be retained.
I also make efforts to engage my students in the learning process by relating the math to the real world, not just to abstract concepts.
As a Certified Secondary Math Teacher, I was required to pass the State Tests to qualify me as a teacher. That required a knowledge of social studies, in addition to math and general pedagogy.
I have been a student of social studies as a natural part of my life. I have tutored social studies both within the AISD and FWISD, as well as privately, for over 13 years. Most elementary and middle school students that I tutor also require support in all core subjects.
I have been a director of about 30 different Corporations and CEO of 6 of those companies. I am currently still the Chairman of the Audit and Finance Committee of ADA Enterprises, Inc of Northwood, IA. and non executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of ARS Enterprises, Inc of Sante Fe Springs, CA.
I have been a guest lecturer in the graduate schools of management at St Louis University (Healthcare Administration) and the University of Groningen (the Netherlands) in Healthcare Administration. I am a former director of Professional Examination Services of New York City, having served 6 years as a Director of that Nationwide Non - Profit Organization responsible for testing and certifying numerous credentialed professionals in all 50 States.
Prior to my second career as an educator, I spent over 40 years developing and managing several major enterprises, including public companies, private companies and non-profit organizations. My major areas of developed expertise were corporate finance, accounting, economics, and business management. I have operated businesses in North America, Europe and Australia and developed expertise in both micro and macroeconomics. My formal education included studying math, industrial engineering, economics, accounting and finance, as well as psychology and education. I have had experience tutoring economics since I have entered my second career as a state certified secondary teacher.
Although I am a certified secondary math teacher, I worked as a substitute and tutor for the AISD from 2000 to 2011. The majority of that work was for K-6 students. Additionally, I have privately tutored K-6 students during that same period. I have also passed WyzAnt's exam for elementary math and have passed the exams for geography and government, which pertain to elementary grades as well as secondary level students. In order to obtain my secondary certification, I also was required to pass the State Exam in Pedagogy, which covers K-12.
I have tutored elementary math to students for over 14 years, both privately, as well as for the AISD and FWISD. Usually, this tutoring activity included all elementary subjects, not just math. Because I provide FREE voice phone support between scheduled lessons, I am able to properly support the development of daily homework and study habits for my students.
Naturally, I have passed the State certification exams, which include Pedagogy K-12, in addition to my certification in secondary math. Last year, I also successfully completed the UTA Summer Institute training in the Gifted and Talented, as well as well as similar training provided by the FWISD. During this year, I have had the opportunity to frequently work with Special Education Students attending FWISD schools.
Prior to my second career as a teacher and tutor, I had a very successful business career for over 40 years. I started and was the CEO for several public and private companies. I have been the chairman of the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors for a wide variety of companies, and I still serve in that role for two companies. I have lead several SEC approved public offerings for both debt and equity, as well as numerous private placements. I have led and advised bank negotiations, as well as data disclosures to a variety of lenders. I have hired, trained and supervised hundreds of accounting and finance personnel, as well as recently tutoring accounting and finance at the college level, graduate students, and individuals already in careers who needed to learn accounting and finance.
As a State Certified Secondary Math Teacher, I have had the opportunity to assist students who (for one reason or another) have been unable to complete their normal high school education. I have also tutored for more than the last 14 years.
My test preparation tutoring (GED, SAT, PSAT, ACT, TAKS, STAAR) covers all subject areas (not just math) and is geared to the specific needs of my individual student. No two students are the same and sometimes "classes" do not provide the opportunity to meet the specific learning needs of the individual student. My students are successful because of their hard work, supported by my dedication to find the ways to connect all new learning to what they already confidently know.
As a State Certified (and background checked) Secondary Math Teacher, I have been involved in teaching and tutoring Geometry for over 14 years. I have learned that Geometry has to be taught for "understanding", not just for memorization of formulas and methods that can be quickly forgotten if the basic understanding has not occurred. I have successfully tutored geometry to support students in their normal classes, for STAAR, PSAT, SAT and ACT test prep, as well as for students requiring Geometry knowledge for other subjects. As I also tutor reading and writing (as well as other core subjects), I help my students learn how to read and understand word problems, as well as to interpret the questions they are trying to answer. Reading comprehension as a very important part of mastering mathematics.
I have had considerable experience in Governmental activities, including testifying before Senate committees, causing bills to be introduced in Congress. I have also interacted with the White House OM&B, as well as the department of HHS and many of its sub-agencies. I have also been active in a variety of elections (Federal, State and Local and had personal meetings with many members of the Federal congress (both houses). I have had the opportunity to tutor US Goverment, US history, economics and politics and I have published and spoke on these subjects.
Linear Algebra is the study of linear equations and their applications. I have taught and tutored linear algebra (for the last 13 years) at a variety of levels including pre - algebra, algebra I, Algebra II, pre - calculus and college algebra. I hold my BS degree as a math major, and I am currently a State of Texas Certified Secondary Math teacher.
As a State Certified Secondary Math Teacher, I have not only passed the State competency exam that includes pre-algebra, I have had the opportunity to teach and tutor the subject for over 16 years. My experience includes students through the AISD and FWISD, as well as individual tutoring students, including those through WyzAnt that I have been privileged to support.
I have tutored pre-calculus for about the last 16 years. As a State Certified Secondary Math Teacher, who had full time classrooms in Algebra II (and other subjects), I had to pass a certification exam including all secondary math subjects through pre-calculus and calculus. Additionally, I have covered pre-calculus classes on a part time basis in the FWISD.
During my career, I have personally been a public speaker. I have spoken to small groups, as well as to large groups of more than a thousand people. In total, I have been a public speaker at over 1000 events including presentations to business groups, international organizations meeting in both the USA and Europe, testimony before Committees of the US Senate and House of Representatives, Town Meetings where I was the featured speaker, as well as a speaker for Community Organizations such as Rotary Clubs. I have also addressed many Wall Street Meetings as part of both "IPO road shows" and educational forums. To be successful as a State Certified Secondary Teacher, I have to personally be a public speaker to my classroom. Additionally, I have professionally written speeches and created presentations, which were delivered by Business Executives and Political Candidates, as well as by attorneys in legal proceedings.
I have also been selected as a participant in public debates and, on multiple occasions, I served as a judge for competitive debate activities.
I have had the experience of being hired as a public speaking coach in private industry for several senior executives.
In the course of my formal education, as well as my careers in private enterprise and Education, I have learned to be an avid reader and a writer of numerous published non-fiction articles, speeches and essays. Since I began tutoring, over 15 years ago, I have always focused on literacy, in addition to the teaching of mathematics, accounting and business. I have taught reading and writing as stand alone subjects, as well as for SAT, PSAT, ACT, GED, TAKS, STAAR and other standardized test preparation. I have worked with students of virtually all age groups. I have had additional training, at UTA and the FWISD, in meeting both the needs of the "Gifted and Talented", as well as the needs of students with various handicaps.
As a State Certified Secondary Math Teacher, I have had the opportunity to prepare students for SAT exam through both my school system and privately. I have successfully supported many students in their preparation for all aspects of the SAT and ACT exams, as well as for other standardized tests. In addition to my focus on math, I have supported students in reading and writing preparation, including the creation of persuasive essays.
In addition to being a State Certified Secondary Math Teacher who has prepared hundreds of students for math STAAR exams, as well as being trained to administer those exams, I have tutored students for TAKS, STAAR and EOC exams in math, social studies and English at various grade levels for over 14 years. I have also tutored students for SAT, PSAT, GED, ACT and other standardized tests for the same number of years.
I am a State Certified Secondary Math Teacher, with over 13 years of experience in tutoring students in all core subjects, as well as focusing on their study skills and habits. I have been specifically trained (and received certificates) in Gifted and Talented Teaching by both the UTA summer institute and the FWISD program. I currently teach in a variety of areas, including working with the FWISD in the handling of Special Education Students and Behavioral Improvement Classes.
I provide FREE voice phone support in the evenings and weekends between regularly scheduled lessons as part of my program to make studying and homework a daily habit for my tutoring clients.
I have specifically worked in TAKS tutoring as an extension of my certified high school math teaching for the FWISD. Although my primary tutoring for the FWISD was in math and accounting, I also had to support the reading/writing testing program, particularly for my Language Center and Transition students. I have also tutored privately for TAKS math and ELA for the last several years. All tutored students ultimately passed the TAKS exams.
As a published writer of more than 200 non-fiction articles, I have had the opportunity to develop a relatively large vocabulary and, more importantly, the ability to understand the variety of usages of many individual words. I successfully completed a variety of English language subjects as an undergraduate and while studying business administration in graduate school. I have also served as an editor of several magazine type publications in college, as well in my subsequent business career.
I have been a student of history and social studies for my entire career. As an avid collector and reader of world history, US history and geography books, I have remained up to date with my knowledge. Naturally, I have been required to be knowledgeable in social studies to be an effective State Certified Secondary Teacher. I have tutored a variety of social studies students both within the FWISD and AISD, as well as privately during the last 13 years.
