My name is Joi A. and I am eager to serve you! I have been in education for the past 12 years and I am ready to make an even greater impact in the lives of my students. I have taught in the general education classroom for four years and in the field of special education for nine. I first began my career in education thinking that I could “make a difference” in the lives of my students. Little did I know all of the challenges that I would encounter. That’s something they DON’T teach you in college!
I wanted to work with students with special needs after having an inclusion class while teaching in Maryland. There were so many students that I had to “leave behind” due to the fast pace of the curriculum (pacing charts and scope and sequence) and because the majority of the class “got it.” So, at the end of that school year, I decided to attend The Ohio State University for graduate school and earn a master's in special education.
After returning home and teaching special education for nine years in the public school system, I continued to be discouraged thinking that I was not “making the difference” for which I had gone back to school. However, it wasn’t it was mostly due to the large class sizes, the lack of supplies and students “lack of interest” in the curriculum, no matter HOW INTERESTING I made it. I have decided to try yet another avenue to make the difference in someone’s life.
During my time in the classroom, I have worked with students with autism (Kindergarten) and students with learning disabilities (grades 4 –12). I have written and followed numerous IEP’s and conducted their meetings as well. I am excited to help you and your child successfully reach some of their goals as well as reviewing prior written goals and will gladly provide you with feedback in a timely manner.
I am a strong believer in meeting students at their level. I believe that if you create an environment that is safe for them, they will be more willing to put forth a best effort. Social and emotional health is a vital component of being a successful member of society. With proper guidance and support, children will be more willing to TRY to achieve the goals that you have helped them set for them. If I believe in them, encourage them and show them what they CAN do through desire, discipline and dedication, they will feel better equip to handle life's "ups and downs" in stable and acceptable ways that will permit them to continue to live life to the fullest.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students.
