About Nicholas

Bio

As a mathematician, I find myself helping people out very regularly with their struggles in this often frustrating subject. I have a real appreciation for seeing people "light up" when they tackle mathematical concepts that they did not understand before our tutoring session. I am a certified high school math teacher and I am the head of the math dept at a local High School. I do not get frustrated with how fast or slow a student learns, but rather focus on making sure he/she understanding...

I do not get frustrated with how fast or slow a student learns, but rather focus on making sure he/she understanding one concept at a time. I have a B.A. in Mathematics from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX.

My other academic credentials are in the field of business. I have a M.S. (masters of science) in Quantitative Financial Analysis from the University of Texas Arlington. This means that I have a rigorous understanding of the theory of finance and economics. This begins with the deep underlying mathematics and covers all the way through practical portfolio management at the institutional level. I am professionally trained to manage a hedge fund, mutual fund, or an individual's retirement portfolio, as well as produce economic analysis. People with my credentials are often referred to as "Quantitative Financial Economists". Academically, I can teach general business, finance, and economics.

Last, but certainly not least in my life is music. I have been playing the piano since I was 8 years old and guitar since I was 21. I play in a band and find music to be a very fulfilling and rich activity. I have a deep knowledge of music theory and extensive experience playing with other musicians. As far as piano goes, after 28 years of playing, I can teach beginner level through advanced. For guitar students, I would prefer to stick to beginners because this is my second instrument, and I'd prefer to let someone more experienced handle the intermediate-advanced students.

I am a very easy going person and I am completely accepting of the differences in people and their learning styles. I am confident that I can help you/your child by figuring out their learning style and using that to guide my teaching. Thank you for considering me and have a wonderful day.

Composition (Music)

I have always had a passion for music. My journey began at age eight when I started learning to play the piano. At age 18 I started composing my own music and I have been doing so ever since. I have written over 40 songs and I have full arrangements for each one of them. After I write a song on either guitar or piano, I score the piece out on sheet music. I have a deep knowledge of music theory and this allows me to take my songs all the way from simple ideas to detailed sheet scores complete with key signature changes, time signature changes, and notation for accompaniment instrumentation. My level of experience enables me to compose pieces of music not just for me, but for groups of individuals to play together and make something that is greater than the sum of its parts. I absolutely love music and enjoy sharing the fruits of my labor with others.

Excellent Tutor

Nicholas was my Finance Tutor. I couldn’t have chosen a better Tutor. He did an excellent job! He took me from being completely lost, to scoring a B+ on my Midterm, to scoring a 100% on my Final Exam. I am a nontraditional student and needed to relearn some Math concepts I had forgotten through the years. He was patient, kind, and compassionate with his Teaching. He did not behave in an arrogant or condescending manner, which can be common when individuals know more than others. He was polite and accommodating when scheduling sessions. His knowledge is like an ocean – vast and deep – yet, he was able to explain concepts with accurate simplicity. Students who are both Visual and Auditory learners would do well with this Tutor. I would highly recommend him to future students!
