About Frederick

If you’re looking for someone to help you become a better writer, or maybe just someone to proofread your papers and offer constructive feedback, I can help. As an English major, I have experience drafting papers, doing revisions as well as working with others to help them understand the writing process. Through my undergraduate studies at The University of Chicago and now into my Masters program in Journalism at Boston University, I have committed to writing as a career.

While in undergrad, I worked with high school juniors and seniors on their college application essays through a program offered at my university. After graduation, I tutored colleagues still in undergrad by reading their papers and offering feedback on how to make their papers better.

For three years I worked in the Boston Public School system as a writing tutor helping all ages of high school students with projects ranging simple five paragraph essays to multimedia presentations. I also worked with ESL students helping them write papers and understand the nuances of the English language. After that, I worked at Northeastern University as a Writing Consultant helping college freshmen adjust to the rigors of college-level writing. Currently, I teach Developmental Writing at Mountain View College, and work in their Academic Center for Writing as a Writing Specialist.

My teaching style is flexible. I adapt to the needs of the person I am tutoring so that they can get the most out the time we have together. I create a relaxed environment in which the most work can be done and a student feels comfortable to ask questions and participate in the learning process.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a BA in English from the University of Chicago and over three years of experience teaching and tutoring English as a subject. I look forward to helping you or your student.

Football

Playing football has always been a source of entertainment and learning for me. I started playing in middle school and have enjoyed the game ever since. Through my time playing football in high school I learned the value of team mates, competition as well as sportsmanship. I did well in high school earning league honors on defense. In college I played for a year but then decided to use my football talents to help other people enjoy the game as much as I do. To this end, I coached and played for a co-ed intramural team and lead that team to an intramural league championship two years in a row. I also coached and played for an inter-collegiate football team that competed against other colleges and universities in the local area. I am a Linebacker and Fullback by played position but I am knowledgeable about all offensive and defensive line positions as well as defensive back positions.

Proofreading

As a journalist, I have helped edit newspapers before they go to print to make sure they lack grammatical errors and meet AP Style standards. This work has given me a keen eye for detail and the ability to spot, correct and easily explain mistakes.

Reading

Teaching reading goes hand in hand with teaching writing. The ability to write well is directly related high levels of reading comprehension. As an educator, I relate reading techniques to my students that improve their comprehension which, in turn, improves their writing.

Writing

With a BA in English, a Master of Science in Journalism, and experience teaching writing in both high school and at the collegiate level, I have made a commitment to writing as a career. My knowledge of various academic essay formats as well as how to quickly and easily communicate them to students helps me educate students and increase their skill.

Awesome and helpful tutor — Frederick allowed me to take my own ideas and run with them. He helped me understand the importance of structure and I got a better feel for how I should format my essay. He would ask me a question and give me time to form a valid and coherent response. His tutoring method really helped me to get my ideas on to paper since I was struggling with writers block. Would definitely recommend! ...
