About Janice

English is the language of opportunity. Increasingly, it is becoming an indispensable key for a successful life. Practicing English with a native English speaker who is trained to work with both native English speakers and English language learners is the best way to improve your English language skills quickly. I have those qualifications. I was born in the United States and English is my native language as well as my area of expertise. I have a master’s in Reading Education from Texas Woman’s University. Additionally, I am certified as a teacher for both English and ESL. Since I worked as a teacher and an ESL teacher in Texas for nearly 20 years, I have had many years of experience helping students reach their goals. I realize that studying English can be very difficult, but I am here to help make that task easier, less stressful, and enjoyable.

Individualizing my lessons to meet the needs of students is something which I do very well. I believe that both competence and confidence in using English for real purposes in their lives are vital for my students. Over the years, I have learned how to accurately assess the abilities of my students and expertly design lessons to motivate them, build on their strengths, and address any areas of weakness. I work comfortably with both English language learners and native English speakers.

For my adult English language learners, I try to make my lessons challenging and interesting. I make sure to include plenty of conversational practice on topics which are relevant for my students in their own lives. This makes it possible for them to develop the English language skills they need and can use immediately for their own social, academic, and/or business purposes. So, whether you are a stay-at-home mom, a university student, or a business professional, I can help you develop the English skills you need.

I enjoy working with students of all ages and abilities. I am available for lessons online, in your home, or at the library of your choice. Please don’t let the cost of lessons stop you from contacting me. My rates are negotiable depending on need. Very often, an arrangement can be made that is beneficial for both of us. So if you, your children, your family, or your friends need help with English, please contact me.

***Remember: Investing in education, for yourself or for your children, is one of the best investments you can ever make!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am successfully tutoring a student for the ACT English test at the present time. I have over 20 hours of English at the undergraduate level. Additionally, I am certified to teach English in grades 7-12 in Texas public schools.

ACT Reading

The ACT is a timed test, so it is very important to sharpen your skills in reading before taking it. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the reading tasks required on this test. I have a master's in reading education with a focus on reading in the content areas, so I am prepared to share strategies and techniques for reading both quickly and accurately in order to help you ace this test.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified in the state of Texas for General Elementary, PreK-6th. Copies of my transcripts, teaching certificate and/or my resume including references are available upon request.

English

My B.A. degree includes over 20 hours of English classes. I am certified in Texas to teach English in Grades 7-12. I enjoy reading anything and everything but especially mystery novels. In my retirement, I have taken up writing as a hobby, and I am working on a series of children's books. I am a member of SCBWI (The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators).

ESL/ESOL

I am certified to teach ESL in Texas public schools and worked for many years as an ESL teacher. I have worked with students from countries around the world including Mexico, Honduras, Columbia, El Salvador, Brazil, South Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Russia, Norway, India, Pakistan, Tonga, Somalia and Sudan.

Grammar

English grammar can be tricky even for native English speakers. Whether you are an international student who wants to perfect your conversational skills or a high school student struggling to complete your first term paper, I can help. My background in English and ESL provides me with the tools I need to help you succeed!

Phonics

I have taught first grade and kindergarten. I have a Master's in Reading Education from Texas Woman's University. Both my teaching experience and educational background have provided me with a working knowledge of phonics and the best strategies for teaching phonics skills to students in order to provide a foundation for learning to read and write in English.

Reading

I have a Master's in Reading Education from Texas Woman's University. I enjoy working with struggling readers and nurturing a love of reading in them. I myself love to read and write. I am a member of SCBWI (The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) and an aspiring author of a series of books for children.

SAT Reading

I am tutoring students for SAT Reading and Writing at the present time. I have specialized training in reading comprehension strategies as well as a master's in Reading Education. I am well qualified to help students develop the critical reading skills they need to do well on the SAT.

SAT Writing

I have successfully tutored students preparing for the SAT writing. Being prepared to write on an unknown topic is difficult, but the added challenge of doing so within a very limited time period is often problematic for many students. Knowing some tricks and organizational strategies is key to doing well on this test. I am experienced in helping students build both their test-taking confidence and competence.

Spelling

I am certified to teach General Elementary in grades 1-8 in Texas public schools. This certification means I am competent to teach language arts, including spelling and phonics.

STAAR

The STAAR Reading is different every year, so I make it my business to keep up-to-date on the latest changes and the specific skills to be tested at each grade level. Additionally, since I was a teacher in the Texas public school system for over 10 years, I am experienced in teaching the basic skills necessary to do well on this assessment plus essential test-taking strategies.

Study Skills

I have 19 years of teaching experience in both public and private schools. I am certified to teach in Texas in the following areas: English (grades 6-12), History (grades 6-12), Elementary Self-Contained (grades 1-8) and ESL (grades PK-12)as well as Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten Teacher Certification. I have a Master's in Education with a major in Reading Education from Texas Woman's University. Many of these courses covered areas such as study skills and reading in the content areas.

TOEFL

I am familiar with the TOEFL iBT test and have tutored for this. There are many resources available to help students prepare for it. A high level of English language proficiency is necessary to do well. The Reading section requires proficiency in reading English, but the Listening, Speaking, and Writing sections all demand the ability to understand spoken English in order to complete the required tasks. Working with a native English speaker is one of the best ways to prepare for the TOEFL iBT. My years of experience as an ESL teacher in the public school system and my many hours of tutoring English for WyzAnt make me an excellent choice as a tutor to help students prepare for this test.

Vocabulary

I have over 20 hours of English at the undergraduate level. I was an ESL teacher for nearly 19 years in Texas public schools. Teaching vocabulary was something which I did everyday.

Writing

I love to write, especially children's stories! I have over 20 hours of English at the undergraduate level, including two semesters of English composition. I am certified to teach General Elementary in grades 1-8 and English in grades 7-12 in Texas public schools.
